Innovative solutions to expand market
potential.
Efficient and optimized production
processes to ensure competitiveness.
Manufacturing companies focus on developing cost effective
synthesis concepts, which achieve best-in-class reaction
efficiency. It is the goal to have a process with least amount of
possible steps while optimizing the amount of raw material used.
As a matter of course the process design should expend the least
amount of energy and use as few solvents as possible. Both
tangibly reduce the environmental impact.
Let’s summarize the goal of process development – it is to utilize
a reaction and process design, developed on a lab scale, which
leads to flexible and reliable production facilities with optimal
response to market demands.

PCS 7 LAB Collection
Why is information important?
Performing experiments is an integral activity during process
development. Results from these experiments can lead to
answer from a wide range of questions like:
• Is it more economical to use material A or replace it with a
less expensive material B?
• Which alternative methods could provide better end
results?
• How can process yield be increased? What performance
indicators are related to that increase, e.g. to temperature
and pressure? Is there coherence between the two? Which
combination provides the least amount of waste?
• How does the quality of the end product depend on the
quality of the input material? What factors (temperature in
the reactor, concentration of materials etc.) influence this?
• Which combination of inputs keeps the production process
within the range with least variation?
• And much more
Experiments – i.e. the active and repeatable information
collection – release recommendations about best suitable
input materials and/or catalysts. And they develop a clear
understanding about the process itself.
Initial quantities of the product serve as starting point for
analysis. Additionally those experiments form the base for
statements about core and by-products.
2 PCS 7 LAB Collection
Control technology in the lab
The innovative PCS 7 LAB Collection bases on the reliable
hard- and software of the scalable control system PCS 7 and
targets the requirements in process development.
PCS 7 LAB Collection continuously collects data during the
experiment, input- and output values as well as other influ-encing
values or status information, respectively. Their smart
combination deliver goals e.g. to clarify input materials or to
optimize the complete process.
Anyhow, laboratory automation using PCS 7 LAB Collection
based on SIMATIC PCS 7 goes far beyond gathering data only.
Jeff Hrkach, BIND Biosciences Vice President of
Pharmaceutical Sciences
The flexibility and expandability of the PCS 7 Lab system
will allow us to grow economically and efficiently through
all three phases of the implementation. The system has all
the tools we need to collect and manage our data as well
as protect our intellectual property.

Safety
The modular system based on SIMATIC PCS 7 effectively
protects your employees and your lab infrastructure.
Continuous monitoring of process engineering values,
combined with an automatic and efficient alarm system for
limit violations, allows implementing stuff more flexible.
In critical situations, the control system may automatically
attempt to establish a stable state, thus preventing injury or
damage. Of course, employees can also intervene at any time
to correct the process.
Flexibility
This state-of-the-art solution meets the specific requirements
of your laboratory. It enables automatic processing and the
documentation of test series with varying parameter sets
and/or sequence structures, based on an easy-to-use Excel
interface, for example.
This interface also provides additional opportunities for
further analysis, such as visualization and evaluation using
line or bar charts in order to easily put test results in context.

The experimental information is stored in an archive and can
be subsequently accessed without problems. An export
option, in the popular CSV format for example, makes the
transfer of measured values into virtually any application for
further evaluation significantly easier.
The comprehensive message system logs all alarm and error
messages that occur during an experiment.
Openness and robustness
The various laboratory equipment and transmitters find
simple connections in the PCS 7 LAB Collection, even directly
under the hood, for example. A wide variety of connection
options are available, for example:
• Analog data transmission for sensors and encoders
• Digital signals for switches and feedback signals
• Serial communication between various special laboratory
equipment with RS282 interface, for example, pumps,
scales, temperature controllers/cooling equipment
• Fieldbuses
Your investment is protected, but remains open for future
developments at the same time.
- 4. Advanced information management
in process engineering laboratories or pilot plants
The information provided in this brochure contains descriptions
or characteristics of performance which in case of actual use do
not always apply as described or which may change as a result
of further development of the products. An obligation to provide
the respective characteristics shall only exist if expressly agreed
in the terms of contract. Availability and technical specifications
are subject to change without notice.
All product designations may be trademarks or product names
of Siemens AG or supplier companies whose use by third
parties for their own purposes could violate the rights of
the owners.
PCS 7 LAB Collection is part of Siemens' offer for advanced
information management in your process engineering
laboratory or pilot plant:
SIMATIC IT R&D Suite
The SIMATIC IT R&D Suite manages the entire R&D process –
from the initiation of a new R&D project, through all the
released product information, to the final product specifi-cations
before beginning production. This includes typical
R&D activities such as project management, the specification
of tests and the design of production processes.
Simatic IT R&D Suite supports product development within
an R&D site and across multiple sites. Even large numbers
of transactions and complex flows of daily technical infor-mation
can be efficiently shared between R&D teams. The
new software enables data sharing and makes it available for
the interdisciplinary analysis. The data is located in a single,
common data store with finely-tuned access mechanisms and
appropriate safety precautions.
SIPAT
With SIPAT, Siemens presents a new software solution to
support the application of Process Analytical Technology
(PAT) in the pharmaceutical industry. SIPAT is scalable and
modularly designed, allowing step-by-step formation of a
quality management system within the framework of the
PAT initiative. The new software solution serves as a common
interface for all PAT tools and can be integrated into existing
manufacturing and development architectures. This ensures
full transparency of quality factors from the plant operation
level up to ERP, MES and LIMS. The software combines process
analyzers, process control tools, data analysis and mining
tools (multi-variant data analysis), tools for data collection,
storage and retrieval, reporting tools, and tools for continuous
improvement and knowledge management.
SIMATIC IT Unilab
Effective quality assurance – LIMS
If companies want to successfully manage large volumes
of quality-related data from a variety of sources, they need
quality assurance systems that support the entire business
process – global LIMS (Laboratory Information Management
System) solutions.
SIMATIC IT Unilab is one of the world's leading LIMS solutions
today – at the top position in the process industry. SIMATIC IT
Unilab supports your company in compliance with key
regulatory requirements such as GLP, GAMP, ISO and FDA –
by managing the complete workflow in the laboratory and
providing electronic signatures and documentation.
Equipment Management
Regulated environments demand specific requirements for
equipment and operators for compliance with (international)
standards. The Equipment Management module allows you to
maintain all the necessary information about each device
within SIMATIC IT Unilab and provides functions for the
management of calibration and maintenance rules –
including the required audit trails.
