Goals: Design Thinking is taught at the d.school as a methodology for students from different disciplines to become innovators. All d.school classes are experiential, and students learn design thinking skills and mindsets by tackling real world challenges as part of multi-disciplinary teams. Having witnessed first-hand the transformative impact of d.school experiences in the behaviors and trajectories of Stanford students, Britos Cavagnaro wanted to bring design thinking and learning by doing to as many people as possible. Novoed, a MOOC platform designed to support experiential and team-based learning, presented the opportunity to do so. Approach: This MOOC was designed to provide learners from different backgrounds and experiences with the opportunity to learn design thinking skills and mindsets by: - tackling a real world innovation challenge; - taking ownership of their learning process by creating their own learning path; - learning with and from others; - incorporating reflection as a key part of their learning process. The course design is compatible with the model of expansive learning, which moves away from knowledge acquisition, towards production of new knowledge and meaning as an outcome for the learner.
