1. Luke Finlay BTEC Media Level 3 HA3 Task 4- Evaluation
HA3 Evaluation
For this project we had to create a series of posters relating to scenes from Romeo and Juliet with a
hip hop/urban twist on them.
Our first task was to create a schedule so that we could manage our time well. In previous tasks my
time management was quite poor so I needed to take this quite seriously. I did this by setting out the
dates in a grid format and underneath the dates I stated whether I could do the work or not on that
day. To make the schedule seem more interesting I filled the box of any date I couldn’t do in red, any
dates I could do in green and any dates I may have been able but not 100% sure I filled in purple. Any
date that had past I filled in grey. I stuck to this system for the first week but then I forgot about the
schedule and didn’t look at it again. If I had checked it and updated it more regularly I would have
finished my project earlier.
Our second task was to create an ideas generation which consisted of Mind maps and moodboards.
The moodboard I created had to have pictures that represent Manchester, Crime and Urban scenes.
This consisted of pictures of Manchester landmarks e.g. The Hilton Hotel, The Urbis and Salford
Quays. It also consisted of crime pictures e.g. Gangs, fights and the police. The rest of the images
were urban scenes such as a lot of graffiti and break dancing. I would eventually use some of these
images for my final designs. For the mind map I had to write down the main themes of Romeo and
Juliet and then work how they could be interpreted in the modern day. I didn’t find this hard and
didn’t take very long to complete this task.
For the next task we had to think of our final ideas and put together a series of moodboards
consisting of the original images we would use for our final designs. This task took longer than I
expected because it took a long time to get the perfect images for the designs and I had to collect a
lot more images than I first imagined.
Once I had collected all the images, I got started on my final designs. To create our final designs we
had to work on Adobe Illustrator. We had to import the images to the document and used the paint
tool over the original images to create a more arty effect. For the first design I had a Manchester
backdrop of a few landmarks, and someone holding someone up at gun point with a police car in the
background, this represents the conflict between the Montague’s and the Capulet’s. My second
image is a women stood on the top of a tower block with a man at the bottom declaring his lover
her, this represents Romeo telling Juliet he loves her despite them being on rival families. My next
image was someone hiding behind a wall as they look at person on the floor in a pool of blood with
the police on the case; this represents the scene of when Romeo kills Tybalt in retaliation of Tybalt
killing his bother Mercutio. My next image is a couple by the sea on their own, this represents
Romeo and Juliet being together one last night before Romeo is banished the next morning. My next
image is a picture of two people meeting up and doing some sort of deal for a potion, this represents
the scene when Juliet gets a potion to appear dead. My final image was an image of two dead bodies
with a knife covered in blood and a smashed bottle; this represents the final scene where Romeo
kills himself because he thinks Juliet is dead.
Overall I was fairly happy with my final designs. I think my biggest problem was that I hadn’t used
Adobe Illustrator very much before this task so my images weren’t very smooth. I also could have
added more hip hop/urban references in my final designs.
