perfect length for the course.”
“At first I was afraid that I wouldn’t be able to learn and fully grasp the
concepts in such a short amount of time, but I’m actually more
engaged knowing that the course is over soon. I would definitely
continue to offer these courses!”

26. Experiential Learning at USC
• Experiential
Learning is a
type of learning
that involves
applying
academic
knowledge to a
real world
setting
• internships, co-op,
employment
• practicum and field
placements
• study abroad
• solving real world
problems for clients
• service learning
• research
• peer leadership roles
27. Experiential Learning at USC
• Experiential Learning
that is high quality
increases student
retention, GPA,
graduation rates,
success after
graduation, and student
satisfaction with their
education
• High quality includes:
– Sustained engagement
(45 hours or more)
– Purposeful and
intentional with clear
expectations
– Feedback and
Continuous
Improvement
– Reflection
28. Experiential Learning at USC
• Goal: All students will engage at least one
high quality experiential learning opportunity
during their undergraduate years.
– Ideally:
• The engagement would be in their second or third year.
• Students would engage in more than one experiential
learning opportunity.
• The goal would be a student requirement approved by
Faculty Senate.
29. How are we going to reach our goal?
• Reaching the goal requires a tracking system
and a way in which to vet that the experiential
learning is high quality.
– Collaboration between USC Connect and BTCM
30. How are we going to reach our goal?
• USC Connect
– Overseeing approval of Experiential Learning
Opportunities (ELOs) including academic and

BTCM records, including EL designated programs

EL designated programs
38. Experiential Learning Initiative
Student Affairs & Academic Support Role
• BTCM will focus on EL-approved programs/experiences

unit’s unique role and purpose - avoid mission creep
• SAAS will continue to identify non-EL programs for BTCM

41. Experiential Learning Initiative
Expectations for SAAS Programs
If your unit proposes an Experiential Learning program:
