Welcome
The Development of electronic
computers can be divided
Into five generations depending
upon the technologies
Used. The Following are the five
generations of Computers.
The period of first generation was 1942-1955. The
beginning of commercial computer age is from UNIVAC
(Universal Automatic Computer). It is developed by two
scientists John W. Mauchly and J.Presper Echert at the
Pennsylvania in 1947. The computers of first generation
used vacuum tubes. These tubes, like electric bulbs,
produced a lot of heat . In this generation mainly batch
processing operating system were used. Punched cards,
paper tape, and magnetic tape were used as input and
output devices. The computers in this generation used
machine code as programming language.
Vacuum tube technology
Unreliable
Supported machine language only
Very costly
Generated lot of heat
Slow input and output devices
Huge size
Need of A.C.
Non-portable
Consumed lot of electricity
ENIAC
EDVAC
UNIVAC
IBM-701
IBM-650
The main features of
first generation are:
Some computers of this generation were:
The period of second generation was 1955-1964. In this
generation transistors were used. The Scientists at Belll
laboratories developed Transistors in 1947. These
Scientists include John Barden, Willian Brattain and William
Shockley. In this generation, magnetic cores were used as
primary memory and magnetic tape and magnetic disks as
secondary storage devices. In this generation assembly
language and high-level programming languages like
FORTRAN, COBOL were used. The computers used batch
processing and multiprogramming operating system.
The main features of second generation
are:
Use of transistors
Reliable in comparison to first generation
computers
Smaller size as compared to first generation
computers
Generated less heat as compared to first
generation computers
Consumed less electricity as compared to first
generation computers
Faster than first generation computers
Still very costly
A.C. needed
Supported machine and assembly languages
Some computers of this
generation were:
IBM 7094 IBM 1620
UNIVAC 1108 CDC 3600
CDC 1604
The period of third generation was 1964-1975. The computers
of third generation used integrated circuits (IC's) in place of
transistors. Jack Kilby developed the concept of integrated
circuit in 1958. it was an important invention in the Computer
field. The first IC was invented and used in 1961. The size of
an IC is about ÂĽ square inch. A single IC chip may contain
thousands of Transistors. In this generation remote
processing, time-sharing, multi-programming operating
system were used. High-level languages (FORTRAN-II TO IV,
COBOL, PASCAL PL/1, BASIC, ALGOL-68 etc.) were used
during this generation.
IC’s used
More reliable
Smaller size
Generated less heat
Faster
Lesser maintenance
Still costly
A.C needed
Consumed lesser electricity
Supported high-level language
IBM-360 series
Honeywell-6000 series
PDP(Personal Data Processor)
IBM-370/168
TDC-316
The main features of
third generation are:
Some computers of this generation were:
The period of fourth generation was 1975-present. The
fourth generations computer started with the invention of
microprocessors. The microprocessor contain thousands
of IC’s. Ted hoff produced the first microprocessor in 1971
for intel. It was known as intel 4004. The size of modern
microprocessor is usually one square inch. It can contain
millions of electronic circuits. In this generation time
sharing, real time, networks, distributed operating system
were used. All the high-level languages like C, C++, DBASE
etc. were used in this generation.
VLSI technology used
Very cheap
Portable and reliable
Use of PC's
Very small size
microprocessor used
No A.C. needed
Concept of internet was introduced
Great developments in the fields of networks
Computers became easily available
DEC 10
STAR 1000
PDP 11
CRAY-1(Super Computer)
CRAY-X-MP(Super Computer)
The main features of fourth
generation are:
Some computers of this generation were:
The period of fifth generation is 1980-till date. In the fifth
generation ULSI (Ultra Large Scale Integration) technology
used. Scientists are working hard on 5th generation. It is
based on the technique of Artificial Intelligence. Computers
can understand spoken words. Scientists are constantly
working to increase the processing power of computers.
They are trying to create a computer with real IQ with the
help of advanced programming and technologies. IBM
Waston computeris one example that outsmart Harvard
University students. All the high-level languages like C and
C++, Java, .Net etc. are used in this generation.
ULSI technology
Development of true artificial
intelligence
Development of Natural language
processing
Advancement in Parallel Processing
Advancement in Superconductor
technology
More user friendly interfaces with
multimedia features
Availability of very powerful and
compact computers at cheaper rates
The main features of
fifth generation are:
Some computer types of
this generation are:
Desktop
Laptop
NoteBook
UltraBook
ChromeBook
