The Rules of Epidemics
According to Malcom Gladwell in his book āThe Tipping Pointā, there are three major rules for
starting an epidemic:
The Law of
Few
ā¢āA large trend can be
started by a small group
of peopleā
The Stickiness
Factor
ā¢āThe epidemic of anti-
corruption must be
memorable for it to
spreadā
The Power of
Context
ā¢āSubtle changes in
context make a large
impactā

The Rules of Epidemics
The Laws of
the Few
Connectors: Everyone is
connected to a network of
2-3 people, who in turn
connect to the world
Mavens: These are the human
data bank who have extensive
knowledge and contacts; they
advise on how to
systematically drive corruption
out of the system
Sales People: These are people who have
the inbuilt ability to persuade and
generate enthusiasm in others e.g. the
private sector. Through these private
sector partners, we can pull and convince
the Nigerian system into the rhythm of
the drive against anti-corruption and
dictate the terms of the
conversation
The Stickiness
Factor
For this to happen we must
design a model to drive out
corruption, that is
repetitive through the
actions taken in ensuring
transparency. The model
must create a reward
system which would ensure
that anti-corruption
champions are celebrated
through a special campaign
like is currently being done
through the accountability
lab program integrity idols
ā where integrity
champions are named and
famed.
The Power of
Context
what we mostly see a
perception that the
Society and
Environment is
corrupt.
Using the theory of
the ābroken windowā
as developed by
James Q. Wilson and
George Kelling, that
crime is a result of
disorder, we can
assume same for the
perceived level of
corruption. This is
because no one seems
to care.

Conclusion
ā
Tipping Points are a reaffirmation of the potential for change and the power
of intelligent action. Look at the world around you. It may seem like an
unmovable, implacable place. It is not. With the slightest push in just the
right place, it can be tippedā
Malcolm Gladwell
āNever doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can
change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever hasā
Margaret Mead
The only static thing is change and this is the time to change the Perception
of Corruption in Nigeria. Letās name and fame the integrity of our systems
and institutions driving the āANTI-CORRUPTION EPIDEMICā
