This week you will explore how the end of WWII brought about a new rivalry between the
US and the Soviet Union for world dominance that became known as the Cold War. This
struggle would overshadow eight presidencies until its end in the 1980s. In much the same
way Americans today fear terrorism, so did Americans in past decades fear Communism.
Consider McCarthyism, the execution of the Rosenbergs, duck-and-cover drills, bomb
shelters, Cold War propaganda, and even science-fiction movies.
 What was life like for the average American in the 1950s as they experienced the
Cold War?
 What comparisons do you see to howAmericans experience terrorism today?
 What is similar? What is different?

American history, a moment that still reverberates in modern America.
Consider one or more of the protest/social movements of the 1960s or 1970s.

Reagan’s economic policies. Reaganomics remains controversial even today, with some
arguing that the dramatic increase of the national debt under Reagan cannot be overcome
with his more positive achievements of job growth and a construction boom. Furthermore,
cheap gasoline, cheap appliances, and cheap credit stimulated a “Yuppie” culture of
unrestricted greed and consumer spending.
Consider the broad effects of President Regan’s economic policies.
 How were the wealthy affected? The middle class? The working class?
 How were women affected, particularly in terms of working outside the home?
 How were unions affected?

we progressing as a nation?
