Dr. Stéphanie Foltran and colleagues investigated the solubility of water in carbon dioxide mixtures containing nitrogen impurities using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. They found that the solubility of water decreases by up to 42% with the addition of 5-10% nitrogen at constant pressure and temperature. They developed a simple FTIR technique to understand the phase behavior of water in carbon dioxide mixtures containing impurities. Future work will investigate water solubility in more complex gas mixtures and develop additional methods to validate the results.
