Waste free home
1. Do you care about the environment?
Well you should! And here's a way to live in a wastefree home!

home near a wetland on a hill
2. Our inspiration was parts of our dream
houses and combined them into one
3. Buttonbush- wetland in Pennsylvania

4. Water Petal - overview
○ Constructed wetland- piping system for clean
water.
○ Grey water goes to a septic tank and cleans
slightly, but then is pumped into constructed
wetland
○ Black water= Reed Beds
○ Low Energy Demand
■ Take shorter showers
■ Install low or dual flush models
■ Water saving shower heads
■ Turn off water when brushing teeth
5. Reed Beds
● By doing this we will need to plant a bog plants,
already there, which contain a high amount of
nitrogen
● They have the ability to 'pump' oxygen down from
their leaves, into their submerged roots and out into
the mud surrounding them.
● This can support large numbers of very active
microbes, which can continue the job of cleaning up
the water to a very high standard.
● To build, dig a sloping pond-like structure, lining it,
filling it with bog-garden compost and planting the
reeds.
● The reeds themselves may take a year or two to get
established.

7. Energy Petal -
overview
○ Solar panels and windmills
○ Store the energy with wind turbines
with water storage
○ Reducing Energy Demand by
■ unplug things when not being
used like TV, microwave, etc.
■ Have natural lighting
■ Don’t use air conditioner/heat--
find another way to stay
warm/cold
■ If needed to use power, use a
power strip
8.
9. Beauty Petal - overview
○ Many windows for natural light. Also pleasing
floors and wall for aesthetics. Paintings and a
welcoming environment.
○ The outside of the building will be a nice color
that blends into the environment, but also is
eye catching and pretty to look at
○ To educate the people we will have an
attachment on the house (that has many
windows and room) explaining how we built
our house and how it works. It would be free
admission for everyone and wheelchair
accessible.
○ To teach the visitors, have a little piece that a
visitor can help build and make a little piece
of the house and learn about how the house
was built and how it doesn’t hurt the
environment, but is still pretty and working.
10.
11. Place Petal - overview ○ Build on a site that has been previously own by
finding places online or walking around and
looking for homes that are for sale or that can
be bought.
○ We will plant foods on the land and have fertile
soil from the wetland. We can store the food by
eating it, but if it is not all used we can store it
in a basket, so no energy is being consumed by
a refrigerator.
○ Not many people live right on a wetland, so we
would have to walk/bike to get places.
12. Why is our design the best?
Our design is the best design because you
need a place to call home, but also save the
environment
