Before we dive in, let me tell you a little bit
about how I got started with affiliate
marketing.
After starting my travel
blog, I invested in a travel
blogging course.
Then I wrote a review of it
on my blog.
Within a few weeks, I
generated my first
affiliate sale, a recurring
payment of $38.80 ($194
total.)
That’s when I discovered
the potential of affiliate
marketing.
From there, I signed up
for more affiliate
networks and programs:
ShareASale, Commission
Junction, flight booking
sites, and tour
companies.
I started with products I
had used.
I also tried to promote
products I knew nothing
about, which was a huge
mistake.
Lesson learned: if you can’t
describe a product and its
benefits to your grandma,
don’t promote it.
After my first sale, I struggled to make more sales on a
consistent basis.
I didn’t understand the most important factor for
generating affiliate sales with my content...
USER INTENT
WHAT IS USER INTENT?
Simply put, user
intent is what readers
are looking for when
they search for a
query on a search
engine. It’s the
problem they’re
trying to solve.
Understanding user intent starts with knowing
who your readers are. Your goal as a blogger is
always to provide helpful information for your
readers, and recommending great products can
help you achieve that.
CONSUMER BUYING CYCLE
CONSUMER BUYING CYCLE
Awareness stage: Readers learn about a new
destination, product, or service for the first time. They
browse the web to gather more information.
Evaluation stage: At this point the reader is
considering making a purchase and looks for deals,
reviews, and product comparisons.
Purchase: The reader decides to buy, adds to cart, and
makes a payment.
LIGHTBULB
MOMENT
To make affiliate sales, you need to target readers in
the evaluation stage of the consumer buying cycle.
That’s when they are actively looking for a solution
to their problem and are most likely to buy.
BEFORE UNDERSTANDING THE CONSUMER BUYING
CYCLE
I promoted Skyscanner in
posts like ‘25 Photos That
Will Inspire You To Visit
Colombia.’
What stage of the
consumer buying cycle
would the reader fall
under?
After understanding user intent and the consumer
buying cycle, I shifted my focus away from flights,
narrowed down a few affiliate products I truly
believed in, and created a more effective content
strategy.
