14. FULL MOONBali’s Important Cerremony
“One of the most celebrated rituals in Bali is the Pur-
nama (full moon). Considered as an auspicious day
by the Balinese people, many important Hindu cer-
emonies and rituals are centred on Purnama.
The months (sasih) are lunar and each month has
30 days. One month is counted day 1 - 15 Penang-
gal from the new moon then day 16 – 30 until the
full moon (Purnama). The full year lunar year has 210
days. Every 30 days Balinese (Hindu) people cele-
brate the Purnama and consider this to be the start
of new success both personally and for business.
The most important full moon in the Luna calendar
is “Purnama ke Dasa or the 10th Full Moon from the
start of the Luna New Year. Balinese also call this
“Purnama Sidhi” which means this is the best full
moon to do something good.
At this time many people worship for something
good not just for business. Balinese Hindu believe
that on Purnama Ke Dasa all the God’s come down
to the earth and bless them with good spirits.
Every 100 years in the calendar is the biggest cel-
ebration of Purnama and takes place in the Besakih
Temple the biggest and holiest temple in Bali situated
on the slopes of Mount Agung.
Every 210 days a celebration called an Odalan takes
place at the local temple to celebrate the birthday of
the temple.
The full moon Purnama Ke Dasa is especially uplifting
because it forms the beginning of the mildest seasons
in Bali, between April and October, when the weather is
cool and clear and this is when many of the island’s most
important temples hold their Odalan at this time”

20. Mother Temple, also named Besakih Temple or
Pura Besakih Bali, is located in the village of Be-
sakih (Rendang Sub-district, Karangasem) right
at the foot of Mount Agung, in the eastern part
of Bali.
As its name already states, it is the mother of all
temples and not just one of Bali’s most impor-
tant temples; it is the most important one in Bali!
Besakih Temple is located about 1,000 meters
above sea level and finally it is the highest sub-
stantial public temple complex.
Besakih Temple dates back to about the 10th
century (the same age as Tirta Empul Temple)
and is actually a complex consisting of about 30
singular temples, with hundreds of shrines, dedi-
cated to the helpers of the gods.
When you have finally reached Pura Penataran
Agung Besakih, the highest temple of the Mother
Temple complex, you will be rewarded with un-
imaginable views and a fabulous, spiritual feeling.
Obviously, the most marvellous things in Bali also
have a reverse side to the coin. As the Mother
Temple is a very popular tourist place, you will be
asked for money at every single corner. A guide
offers his knowledge here, a seller his products
there and obviously you have to pay for the en-
trance as well. Additionally you will probably get
forced to buy a Sarong for 50 USD which is 3-4

pushy people. As Besakih temple plays

stay away from Pura Besakih and see
other major temples on Bali such as
Pura Luhur Uluwatu (Uluwatu Temple) or

Temple of Besakih, or Pura Besakih, in the village
of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung in eastern
Bali, Indonesia, is the most important, the largest
and holiest temple of Hindu religion in Bali, and one
of a series of Balinese temples.
Perched nearly 1000 meters up the side of Gunung
Agung, it is an extensive complex of 23 separate
but related temples with the largest and most im-
portant being Pura Penataran Agung. This is built
on six levels, terraced up the slope. This entrance
is an imposing Candi Bentar (split gateway), and
beyond it the even more impressive Kori Agung is
the gateway to the second courtyard.

24. The following brief explanation of three main Balinese Dances should help to understand the
meaning of Legong, Barong, and Kecak Dances.

Legong Dance
Their dance education can start as early as four years
old while the body is still very flexible. For some special
temple ceremonies, that occur only every thirty to fifty
years, only young girls or boys that have not yet reached
puberty can perform a special dance for the Gods. The
Balinese believe that before puberty, it is easier for these
young innocent boys and girls to enter a trance.
Performances in restaurants are for entertainment only
and can be performed by dancers of all ages.
The Legong Dance is the most feminine dance on Bali
and can contain different stories. Eighteen different kinds
of Legong Dances have developed and depending on the
story the dancers tell, 2-5 girls may perform at the same
time.
In the most popular form of Legong, knows as Legong
Kraton, three female dancers perform together. Every
dance has several things in common; the intricately made
and decorated costumes, the headdress with frangipani
flowers, and the dancers wear beautiful elaborate makeup.
Dancers are accompanied by a gamelan orchestra.
Many young girls want to become popular Legong Danc-
ers, however only the most talented girls are allowed to
perform on stage.

25. The Kecak Dance, also known as the Ramayana Monkey
Chant, is an absolute must see for visitors to Bali. This
unique dance is performed by a hundred or more men
using their voices as percussive musical instruments. The
men sit in a circle just in front of the audience. They sway,
stand up, or lie prone as the story develops.
The chanting men wear checked cloth around their waists,
leave their chests bare, and throw their arms upwards with
their fingers outstretched to the skies. This gesture drives
out evil. Some of the men become actors in the drama
being unfolded by the dancers who enter the stage and
depict a battle from the Ramayana.
Kecak Dance
Barong Dance
As the performers chant, dancers stage a battle in which
the monkey king, Sugriwa and his army of monkeys help
Prince Rama fight the evil King Rahwana. Kecak has its
origins in sanghyang, an exorcism dance in which some
dancers go into a trance. The Kecak is so popular among
tourists that you can find performances almost anywhere
on Bali.
One of the best places is at the cliff-top temple of Ulu
Watu. However, Kecak can be seen in Ubud, Batubulan,
and all over the island.Any place you choose, you are sure
to enjoy the drama.
Barong then cast a stronger spell that helped the soldiers’
bodies resist the sharp keris. In the end, Barong’s powers
proved to be stronger, thus Rangda ran away. A partici-
pant can die or get seriously injured in a Barong dance.
It is said that if Rangda’s spell is too strong, a weak sol-
dier may not be able to resist it. Even with the help of
Barong, he may end up hurting himself with his own keris.
The masks of Barong and Rangda are considered sacred
items, and before they are brought out, a priest must offer
blessings by sprinkling them with holy water taken from
Mount Agung. As well as the priest’s blessings, offerings
must be presented. Balinese Dances are impressive and
were originally not performed to entertain tourists. The
meaning is based on beliefs in the Bali Hindu Religion. In
these dances you will still find much of Balinese traditions.
Even though the performances have changed to entertain
tourists, they keep still the original basic meanings.
Barong is probably the most well known Balinese dance.
This dance tells the story of the fight between good and
evil. The Barong Dance is a good example of the Balinese
way of acting out the relationship between mythology and
history being blended into one reality.Rangda, the mother
of Erlangga, the King of Bali in the tenth century, was
condemned by Erlangga’s father because she practiced
black magic. After she became a widow, she summoned
all the evil spirits in the jungle to punish Erlangga. A fight
occurred, but she and her black magic troops were so
strong that Erlangga had to ask for the help of Barong.
Barong came to help Erlangga’s soldiers. They began to
fight. Rangda cast a spell that made Erlangga’s soldiers
all want to kill themselves. The soliders then pointed their
poisoned keris, a sharpened sword like knife, into their
own stomachs and chests.

26. Nusa Penida is an island southeast of
Indonesia’s island Bali. There are some
neighbouring islands near to Bali. There
are 3 most famous located away from
Bali to the south-east known as Nusa
Penida Island, Nusa Ceningan Island and
Nusa Lembongan Island.
Each of these Islands shares their own
unique tourism destination and arts. For
many peoples, these three Islands might
not be recognized as parts of Bali’s dis-
trict. Somehow, they give a great contri-
bution to the tourism development in Bali
area. Among these three islands, Nusa
Penida Island is the largest one, and also
well known as the best destination for
scuba diving.
Although the two others islands, Nusa
Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan is lo-
cated separated, they’re still administra-
tively belong to the Nusa Penida area.
Administratively, the islands is a district
of Klungkung regency. The Badung
Strait separates the islands and Bali.
In this archipelago, specially Nusa Penida Is-
land, you will find beautiful pure tropical beach-
es and some conservation places protecting
plants, Jalak Bali birds sanctuary , and also tur-
tle. When you are diving in Nusa Penida Island,
you will likely to see the large pelagic, such
as Manta Ray’s at some locations and Mola
Mola (Oceanic Sunfish). If you get lucky, you will
sometimes see the whale-shark too.

28. Balangan Beach is located in the Bukit, in the
south west of Bali. This place is a real hidden gem
and “The Golden Sand Area” is well worth a visit.
Situated under a massive cliff, Balangan Beach is
not easy to find but precisely for this reason this
wonderful beauty offers nearly full privacy. Apart
from some surfers who enjoy the fantastic waves
in this area you will only meet some other tourists
who found this place by coincidence.
A public parking place on top of the cliff is pro-
vided and the access to Balangan Beach is very
easy, you just have to handle the stairs down the
cliff to the beach. Because of the massive waves,
Balangan Beach is not highly recommended for
swimming but offers another opportunity which is
rare to find somewhere else in Bali, a romantic cliff
edge wedding with stunning sunset views!
In case you plan to get married, Balangan Cliff will
make the most important day in your life simply
unforgettable. Wedding agents in Bali offer cer-
emonies in every price class. Starting from around
2,000 USD and the sky is the limit. In case you
haven’t booked your hotel yet, basic accommo-
dation around Balangan Beach is provided for as
little as 20 USD.
The rooms are obviously not equipped with an air
conditioner but those who are happy with only a
fan can make staying around Balangan Beach a

watu Temple (cliff edge temple) which is very
popular for its wild monkeys. In case you are
travelling with kids it has to be mentioned
that the cliff around Uluwatu Temple is par-
tially unsecured. On the way back it is highly
recommended to make a stop in Jimbaran
Bay for a seafood dinner.
The local warungs (restaurants), nestled in
between the area of Four Seasons and Inter-
conti Hotel, offer real value for money. A 1.5
Kilo Red Snapper, coming with rice, soup,
vegetables and different sauces only adds
up to about 10 USD and it is enough for two.
In addition to this, Jimbaran Bay is a very ro-
mantic place and offers a great sunset. Be
there at the latest around 6.00 pm.

30. The Place With Highest Temple Density In The World!
Without a doubt, there is no other place in the
world with a temple density higher than the one in
Bali. Even for Balinese it is partially very hard to fig-
ure out the history or meaning of a special temple
as we have many myths and stories behind them,
from time to time 3 and more.
This has something to do with the fact that differ-
ent villages have shared bigger temples and every
village has developed over a longer period of time
an own story.
As soon as he had started to damage the temple,
the King and his soldiers were attacked by thou-
sands and thousands of bees and their mission
failed. Serious documentations about temples can
be found in “Lontars”, which are palm leaf manu-
scripts in Asia. The oldest existing ones date
back to 500 BC, the oldest ones in Bali, shown at
Lontar Museum Gedong Kirtya, are… years old.
Gedong Kirtya is the only museum in the world
which shows a Lontar collection. It is interesting
to hear that some names are always mentioned in
the Lontars when it comes up to temples.
Regarding to these old manuscripts Dang Hyang
Nirartha
is one of them. Dang Hyang Nirartha was a chief
counselor of a Javanese King. He felt in Love with
one of the patrons wife and had to leave Java in
1537.
After arriving in Bali he was the founder of the three
temple system in Bali. Every village still follows this
philosophy and the temple for Brahma (the god of
creation) is facing the mountain, the Vishnu temple
(the maintainer and protector) is based in the mid-
dle of the village and for Shiva (the destroyer) the
temple is facing the ocean.
Also the Lontars tell about Mpu Kuturan, a travel-
ling priest. Batukaru Temple, the Shrines at Ulu-
watu temple or Bat cave temple are attributed to
him. If you are now interest in temples and a Bali
Newbi, we highly recommend to see Bratan Teple.
It is located on the shores of Bratan lake about
1240 meters above the sea level. The climate
there is already completely different and the area

34. The road form Denpasar to Ubud can be described
very easily with four words, “The Road of Art “.
On the trip from Denpasar to ubud, about 26 kil-
meters, you will see a big selection of traditional
arts and crafts. Many of the crafts people work
outside and invite visitors to watch their sakillful
hands as they carefull make beautiful creations.
Stonemasons, silversmiths, goldsmiths, puppet-
eers, woodcarvers, painters and dancers and
dancers can all be seen on this almost magical
trip through an artistic dream world.
Batubulan, the vilage of stonemasons, providesan
interesting first stop on your trip. Figures carved
from stone can be seen averywhere on the road.
The stone carvings, all of highest quality, require-
nastrong hand to carve images out of a block of
stIn Celuk, the work of the goldsmith and silver
smiths is outstanding. In some shops, you can
watch the designers working on their artistic crea-
tions. Many of their ancestors were once commis-
sioned to work for Balinese Royalty.
A stop n the art market in Sukawati is a must .
Among many other fine arts nd crafts, this art
market features a selection of traditional Balinese
temple umbrellas known as “Payung”. The mar-
ket also has fine hand carved detailed puppets,
known as a “Wayang”. The carefully carved de-
tailed puppets are made from buffalo leather.
Some of the more exclusive puppets are usually
owned by the local dalang dalang, or puppet mas-
ter master. Sukawati offers a variety of souvenir
that make perfect gifts to take home to a friend or
of yourself. Next on the road is Mas, the village of
woodcarvers. Status of Gods or more playful im-
ages of big eyed frogs highly filigree carved doors
or just simple window frames are all lined up for
the visitors to see. For the master woodcarvers
in Mas nothing seems impossible to carve. The
villages of Pengosekan dan Peliatan are both nter-
esting places to see Bainese paintings.

In Pengosekan, the Community of Young Artists,
a group founded in 1969 helps poor families to
give their children a good art education. When
they become artists, they make money to help
their families.
Every kind of art and craft can be found in Ubud at
the tradisional markets and in shops on the Mon-
key Forest Road. If you wish to create your own
silver pendant or ring, there are shops with ex-
perts that will teach you how to create your unique
piece of jewelry.
During your trip, a must see is Bali’s famous
Barong Dance in Batubulan. If you wish to get
back to nature, a stop at the Bali Bird Park in Sin-
gapadu is a beautiful attraction; it is especially nice
for children.

Gunung Kawi Temple
Gunung Kawi Temple (Pura Gunung Kawi) is a very
unique Balinese temple complex, carved into the
mountain and located on Pakerisan River, close to
Tampak Siring village in the regency of Gianyar. Pura
Gunung Kawi bears a resemblance to the South
American Maya Temples as it is surrounded by a lush
green tropical rain forest and situated on a mountain
river.
Gitgit Waterfall is located in a plateau, about 300 me-
ters above sea level. It is the height of about 40 me-
ters, surrounded by tropical trees and a lush green
environment. The way to Gitgit Waterfall is paved with
lots of stalls and on either side of the path you can find
some lush plantations (coffee and cloves). The sellers
are not aggressive at all and you can finally enjoy a 15
minute walk without getting hassled by anyone.
Penglipuran Village in the traditional Balinese country-
side is located in the Bangli regency, about an hour and
30 minute trip from Kuta. See the original Balinese way
of living, visit traditional houses and talk to the locals.
To keep this outstanding cultural attraction going, the
family agreement is that the oldest family member has
to move back to Penglipuran after both parents have
passed away. A must see for Culture Lovers!
Banjar Hot Spring Bali is a very peaceful place where
plenty of locals come for relaxation as well. The toilets
are clean, well maintained and lockers are available.
One of the pools can be described as a kid’s pool and if
you are travelling with the whole family, you can splash
around with your children here. A local Restaurant pro-
vides basic food and cold drinks and some smaller sou-

Mount Batur’s original height was about 4,000 meters
in prehistoric times. After an enormous eruption noth-
ing was left apart from a large caldera which in 2012
became part of the Global Geopark Network by UN-
ESCO. The actual height of Mount Batur is 1,717 me-
ters. Mount Batur offers a great opportunity to all cy-
cling and trekking fanatics. The Sunrise Trekking Tour is
highly recommended to all those who are physically fit.
Sukawati Art Market is the biggest local market in
Bali to purchase traditional handicrafts and traditional
handmade products, spanning over many blocks on
the main road of Sukawati. It can get very interesting
when you arrive at the “food department” as this area
is extremely local. You should NOT go there if you have
a weak constitution! The Trip from Kuta to Sukawati Art
Market on average takes one hour.
About a 45 minute trip away from Kuta, in the regency
of Tabanan, you are able to find a very interesting but
widely ignored attraction; The Subak Museum. Subak
stands for a very ingenious water irrigation manage-
ment system which was developed in Bali hundreds
of years ago but is still in use. A visit to this museum
teaches you about Bali’s agricultural tradition with the
use of numerous farming related exhibits.

in the south. The Monkey forest became one of Bali’s
most popular sightseeing destinations and plenty of
guides put it on their selection of tours. This is because
you can see plenty of wild monkeys and it’s the perfect
place to go with kids. Be aware of thieving monkeys
and make sure you don’t wear any sunglasses, caps or
necklaces and take care of your wallet.
The Bird Markets are very local markets. The biodiver-
sity of the shown birds in such a small area is simply
amazing and reminds more to a Zoo then a market.
Hundreds of birds are waiting for a new owner. Howev-
er not only Birds can be found at Bali’s major Bird Mar-
kets in Denpasar. Puppies, cats, bats, monkeys and
other exotic creatures can be bought too. Warning:
Most of the cages are inappropriate for the species.
Seminyak Beach is very well known. It perfectly com-
bines relaxation, dining and nightlife. As with plenty of
other places located on Bali’s west coast, it is a great
spot to see Bali’s wonderful sunsets. Plenty of restau-
rants and beach bars in every price category stretch
along the area known as ‘double six’. The most popular
beach club there is called Cocoon, it’s very well known
for its sophisticated parties such as the Splash Party.
It is a myth that religions can’t live in peace and harmo-
ny next to each other. See a Protestant and a Catholic
Church next to a Buddhist or Hindu temple as well as a
Muslim mosque nearby. Some of these prayer houses
are open for public for a little donation and if you are in
Nusa Dua or Jimbaran you shouldn’t miss out on the
opportunity to see, maybe the only place in the world
where religions are ‘that close’ to each other.

biggest Temple in Bali, Besakih Temple. The tem-
ple is visited by local residents as well as tourists.
There is also a water park, Tirta Gangga Water
palace, rice fields, rolling hills and crystal clear wa-

attractions in 10 Hectares of Karangasem made
by three architects from Bali, the Netherlands and

Bangli Regency attractions can be found at Bukit
Jati, which is an ideal place for Hiking and Trek-

Temple. In the mountainous areas around Kin-
tamani, there are Mount Batur and Lake Batur

springs in Toyabungkah. Bangli District is the only

44. One-third of Klungkung Regency (112,16km²) is
located between the Island of Bali. The other two
thirds (202,84km²) is in the islands of Nusa Peni-
da, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. These

thagosa, is an ancient building complex erected
during the reign of the first King of Klungkung.
There is also a Temple called Goa Lawah with an

82. Lovina has more or less the same attrac-
tions as Singaraja; Dolphin Tours, Snorkel-
ling and Diving. Although in addition to these
things you can find the trekking to waterfalls,
Banjar Hot Springs (Air Panas – Hot Wa-
ter), diving or snorkelling around Menjan-
gan island, home to the best preserved coral
reef in Bali and the Banjar Buddhist tem-
ple, the biggest one in Bali close to Lovina.
A very moderate nightlife has started to de-
velop here, especially on weekends and it’s
getting a little bit busier outside of the hotels.

Lovina is a very quiet area and action seek-
ers, apart from Divers and Surfers who like
the ocean calmer, should only come for a

84. Candi Dasa is located in the Samuh neigbor-
hood of the Bugbug Village, 12 kilometres
southwest of Amlapura, the main town and
capital of the Karangasem regency, seaside
town in eastern Bali that rests on the edge of
a fresh water lagoon. It was formerly known
as Teluk Kehen (Kehen Bay), but since the
tourism industry was introduced the name
was changed to Candidasa.
Only one thing is for sure, Candidasa is a tran-
quil coast offering varying accommodation,
