An Easy definition would be “going from one place to another, typically over a distance of some length”.

Tourism is defined as "the commercial organization and operation of
vacations and visits to places of interest.”
The travel industry is everything that makes visiting new places possible!
This includes everything from airlines and hotels to theme parks and
campsites.
As a travel professional you will act as an agent between tour,
transportation and accommodation operators and your client.
In Canada, travel agencies have a market size of $2 billion with over 6,000
businesses and 23,000 employees (as of 2019).
The largest travel companies are Expedia Group, Booking Holdings, Transat
AT and Maritime Travel, however majority of the industry is made up of
small businesses.
Globally, the tourism has a market size of $2 trillion with over 3
million businesses and 27 million employees (as of 2019).
The largest companies are Delta Air Lines, The Walt Disney Company,
CWT, Marriott International, and Expedia Group.
The World Travel & Tourism Council's 2019 analysis of the global
economic impact of Travel & Tourism showed the sector to account
for 10.3% of global GDP and 330 million jobs, 1 in 10 jobs around the
world!

• people in the Prairie Provinces have the highest average spend at $3,365 per year

• Baby Boomers spend the most with an average of $3,299 per year.
• Millennials are significantly lower at $2,205 per year.

• 2021 indicated after the Covid-19 pandemic that Canadians would spend
about $11.5 billion on travel this year

Travel Industry & its Segments
Now what does all of that mean for you?
Well, there are many ways that you can get involved in the travel industry, such as working in the following
segments:
Who is aTour Operator?
ATourOperator is a person or company that thinks up ideas for holidays, researches the ideas, designs the
holiday itinerary and content, creates exclusive deals, highlights destinations and then markets the
resultant package to its clients.
Tour Operators are involved in planning, development, promotion, administration and implementation of
tourism products.
They oversee all the day-to-day tasks and also supervise, motivate and train staff.
They are employed by tour or transportation companies, resorts or attractions.
TheTravel Agent
A leisure travel agent
however isn’t the only
position at a travel agency.
There is a large amount of
support staff such as human
resources, accountants,
administration, marketing
and so on.
Typically all of these
employees receive the
same travel perks as the
actual agents (except for
commissions).
Agents that book for vacationers
are known as leisure agents
Agents that book for employees are
known as corporate agents also
called client services consultants.
A travel agent is someone
who acts as the broker
between tour,
transportation and
accommodation operators
and the client.
An agent can either work
in an agency with others or
at home (Connected
Agents as per TBB).
How do you get paid?
Speaking on commissions… let’s get to the question everyone’s wondering. How do travel agents make
money?
For leisure agents, when selling travel products to the clients the producer of that product generally pays a
commission.
So selling a luxury cruise will earn you more than selling a one-day rental car would.
As an agent you are both a benefit to the producer (Supplier) and the buyer. The producer being the
travel company (ie: cruise line, hotel, tour operator) and the buyer being the traveler.
You are advertising and selling the producer’s (Supplier’s) product while also giving the buyer something they want,
and may not have known about otherwise.
How do you get paid?
Over the years the commission structure has changed differently and agencies are always looking for
workarounds and One of those workarounds is a ‘service’ or ‘planning’ or ‘management’ fee which is usually
charged if there is very less commission in the deal or from the supplier.
TBB has a fixed management fee that is added into the overall taxes for Adult Travelers i.e. $30 CAD. Don’t
be afraid to charge these, your time and knowledge is valuable and you shouldn’t be providing a
professional service for free!

A LeisureTravel agent helps travelers who want to take a vacation or travel for leisure rather than business or other reasons.
As a leisure travel agent, your responsibilities involve identifying your clients’ travel goals, finding suitable hotels or resorts,
and booking accommodations.
You also offer advice about certain destinations for a vacation or a honeymoon, maybe a Bachelor / Bachelorette celebration.
You’re the Specialist in selling tour packages or packages that include both hotel and air.
Leisure travel agents sell vacation packages to the general public.
They are responsible for arranging trip itineraries based on clients interests and budget. Leisure travel agents increasingly are
focusing on a specific type of travel, such as adventure tours.
These Travel professionals work with companies to manage their corporate travel arrangements.
This can include transport, accommodation, local services and helpline support.
Corporate travel agents work to make sure business travel is safe, efficient and cost-effective for the organization.
Skilled corporate travel managers can save employees time and effort by recommending the best routes and itineraries for
trips.

The largest travel companies are Expedia Group, Booking Holdings, Transat AT and Maritime Travel, however majority of the industry is made up of small businesses. Globally, the tourism has a market size of $2 trillion with over 3 million businesses and 27 million employees (as of 2019). The largest companies are Delta Air Lines, The Walt Disney Company, CWT, Marriott International, and Expedia Group. The World Travel & Tourism Council's 2019 analysis of the global economic impact of Travel & Tourism showed the sector to account for 10.3% of global GDP and 330 million jobs, 1 in 10 jobs around the world!

  • 6. Travel Industry & its Segments Now what does all of that mean for you? Well, there are many ways that you can get involved in the travel industry, such as working in the following segments:

ATourOperator is a person or company that thinks up ideas for holidays, researches the ideas, designs the holiday itinerary and content, creates exclusive deals, highlights destinations and then markets the resultant package to its clients. Tour Operators are involved in planning, development, promotion, administration and implementation of tourism products. They oversee all the day-to-day tasks and also supervise, motivate and train staff. They are employed by tour or transportation companies, resorts or attractions.
  • 8. TheTravel Agent A leisure travel agent however isn’t the only position at a travel agency. There is a large amount of support staff such as human resources, accountants, administration, marketing and so on. Typically all of these employees receive the same travel perks as the actual agents (except for commissions). Agents that book for vacationers are known as leisure agents Agents that book for employees are known as corporate agents also called client services consultants. A travel agent is someone who acts as the broker between tour, transportation and accommodation operators and the client. An agent can either work in an agency with others or at home (Connected Agents as per TBB).
  • 9. How do you get paid? Speaking on commissions… let’s get to the question everyone’s wondering. How do travel agents make money? For leisure agents, when selling travel products to the clients the producer of that product generally pays a commission. So selling a luxury cruise will earn you more than selling a one-day rental car would. As an agent you are both a benefit to the producer (Supplier) and the buyer. The producer being the travel company (ie: cruise line, hotel, tour operator) and the buyer being the traveler. You are advertising and selling the producer’s (Supplier’s) product while also giving the buyer something they want, and may not have known about otherwise.

Over the years the commission structure has changed differently and agencies are always looking for workarounds and One of those workarounds is a ‘service’ or ‘planning’ or ‘management’ fee which is usually charged if there is very less commission in the deal or from the supplier. TBB has a fixed management fee that is added into the overall taxes for Adult Travelers i.e. $30 CAD. Don’t be afraid to charge these, your time and knowledge is valuable and you shouldn’t be providing a professional service for free!
