PROJECT LENGTH: 3 WEEKS
A mausoleum is a place for reflection and immersion. This
project progressed from the conceptual form of striated cloud
patterns that was abstracted to create a dynamic experience
of space and light.The use of the cloud configuration creates
sheltered,privatespacesforvisitorstooccupyandfullyimmerse
themselves with the cloud. Overhead panels connect the three
mausoleum structures and provide covered spaces for visitors.
Depressed pathways cut between the buildings and snake
around the cloud figures.The winding path creates moments of
enclosure and separation for mourning visitors. Patches of light
shine through openings left from the panels as if clouds in the
sky are breaking and filtering light through.

PROJECT LENGTH: 3 WEEKS
The skywalk is inspired by Venturi’s “Learning from Las Vegas”
which investigates the “duck” iconic architecture versus the
“decorated”shed architecture. The skywalk finds its shape from
the manipulations and juxtapositions of two architectural icons:
one old and one new; from these forms, the skywalk becomes
a new “duck”, or icon, for Las Vegas. Narrow slits in the walls,
inspired by a zoetrope, display slivers of the city outside of
the enclosure. Throughout the experience, pedestrians watch
the city in small, fleeting moments that compose the entire
picture of the Las Vegas Strip. The circulation path inside the
skywalk takes the pedestrians from the ground level entrance,
progressing through wide, low spaces that slowly narrow and
stretch vertically as the path climbs until the skywalk meets the
train station at the other end.

7. OLENTANGY PUBLIC ART PLAN03
This project focused on beautifying the Olentangy River Trail
through both temporary and permanent art installations along
the trail. The proposed plan sought to create a comfortable and
appealing experience at several unsightly locations that also
reflectstheactiveandenergeticspiritofafitnesstrail.Temporary
art is concentrated along the river’s edge where construction
fences lined the bank in order to protect the sensitive habitat
restoration for the Olentangy; the fence is conceptualized
as a biodegradable and sustainable fence that mimicks the
landscape of the riverbank. Permanent or semi-permanent
installations enahnce dark and unwelcoming moments along
the trail such as bridge underpasses and retaining walls. The
public art plan proposed to connect nearby stakeholders with
local artists to implement and maintain the art over time.

FOUNDATIONS AND FUTURE OF KNOX COUNTY04
The Area Development Foundation of Knox County (ADF), a
membership-based business organization for Knox County,
Ohio, aims to strengthen the economy by increasing the
county’s capacity for financing development and attracting
new industry. This studio focused on analyzing the economic
landscape of Knox County, Ohio, and investigating new possible
methods of financial activity. Analysis of existing conditions
such as employment by industry, sources of tax revenue, and
community resources and programs provided insight into how
the county currently operates. 74 stakeholders in the county
were identified – 26 of which were interviewed – to conduct
a SWOT Analysis, a process that highlighted the county’s
strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and strengths. By looking
critically at the current information and opinions across the
county, the studio crafted five recommendations for the ADF to
strengthen and diversify the economy and suggested financial
tools to implement these actions. The studio produced a report
of its findings and recommendations and presented its final
report at a public meeting in Knox County.

LIVING TINY IN COLUMBUS05
With the Tiny House Movement gaining momentum across the
United States, this studio started groundbreaking research on
tiny homes in the City of Columbus for the Housing Dialogue
Group. The project consisted of several facets including current
affordability issues, stakeholder interviews, survey analysis,
zoningordinancereviews,sitedesign,costanalysis,andhousing
model ideation. Collectively, the studio was concerned with
how tiny houses could address issues in the housing market
such as affordability and ownership. The survey questionnaire
provided identified and described a population that would be
interested in living in tiny houses. On the other hand, zoning
reviews and cost analyses were conducted for two models to
test the feasibility of introducing tiny houses into the market.
The product was a “How-to” guide that translated the project
into a replicable process that could help other organizations
across the country learn more about tiny houses in their cities.

Habitat for Humanity of Central Ohio and Community
Development for All People partnered with The Kirwan
Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity to prepare for
a neighborhood-wide development project in the City of
Columbus. The Kirwan Institute was responsible for conducting
a neighborhood assessment of housing conditions in the South
Side community.
This assessment included field surveys of residences, vacant
structures and lots, and entire blocks to evaluate the conditions
of the neighborhood. The survey information was compared
with ratings reported by the Franklin County Auditor. The
purpose of this analysis was to provide more detailed and
updated information for the community that will inform
strategic placement for Habitat for Humanity’s development.
Detailed property-by-property surveys evaluated the condition of visible exterior features such as windows, doors, siding, etc. and features
of the property overall.These ratings were translated onto a scale of 1-6 (6 being excellent, 1 being poor) for comparison with the auditor’s
ranking categories. Kirwan found that the majority of homes in the neighborhood rated 5 out 6 (very good condition).
Comparison of residential property ratings between Kirwan’s survey
data and the Franklin County Auditor’s data shows great dissimilarities.
Kirwan’s data was scaled to parallel the auditor’s ratings.

This project uses Neighborhood Corridor Revitalization
grant funding to assist business owners in qualifying areas in
Columbus to complete exterior and interior renovations. Design
concept included an interior renovation, exterior updates, and
graphic branding for the new boutique in the King-Lincoln
district of Columbus. The process included several rounds of
conceptual work and consultations with the business owner to
embody the owner’s vision.This project is currently undergoing
the application process, and construction of the design will
begin soon.

The Giggles and Blessings project is part of the Neighborhood
Corridor Revitalization grant, funding exterior and interior
commercial renovations in qualifying areas of Columbus.
Conceptual exterior designs proposed painted patterns, new
awnings, and landscaping to this child day care in the Linden
neighborhood of Columbus. The project also inlcuded graphic
for new signage on the front of the building.

Evaluation of land development processes in
consideredthequestionofwhetherpublicparticipation
can accomplish goals of combating vacancy and
contributing to revitalization in four mid-sized cities
in Ohio: Hamilton, Lima, Mansfield and Youngstown.
This research analyzed planning strategies using a
theoretical framework, Archon Fung’s the Democracy
Cube. Examination for this research will included
policy and document analysis to gauge the extent to
which public input informs decisions. By comparing
the variations of citizen involvement and outcomes as
they connect the public realm with land development,
this research investigated the tendencies for the city
to locate engagement within a particular zone of
public participation. The purpose of this research
was to identify effective land banking strategies at
both the city and county level and their capacities to
incorporate public participation in future efforts in
land development strategies.

WESTERN EUROPE
The European Architectural Studies course was a 4-week study
abroad opportunity that toured countries of Western Europe:
Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Spain. The
program visited sites of notable architectural, landscape and
urban planning projects as studied in architecture history prior
to the trip. Prior to the trip, students compiled background
research of notable architectural works into a reference book
for the trip. The course focused on developing architectural
sketching and diagramming skills through daily lessons and
exercises.The product of the program was an individual book of
architectural sketches.
