2. Context – What was the problem to be solved?
MLC tower: height 220 m, 68 floors, octagonal shape, variable cross
section.
Work conditions: 4 locations with two platforms one above the other.
Rain, Wind and storm.
Environment: building remains operational, including retail and food
court. At the corner of two main streets of Sydney.
Freyssinet designed and supplied 4 Non Standard mast climber
platforms: 40m long x C shaped
Challenge: a NEW SET UP must be achieved at each movement.
During a platform relocation between levels, a tape measure fell from
Level 32 and landed approximately 1m from a pedestrian. Nobody was
injured but it has been an important reality check for us and the client.

1. Remove hazard
Reduce gaps => Platform clearance reduced to 30mm instead of 70mm
Remove small items installation=> No more screws or items which cannot be lanyarded
Mast encapsulation & deck extension
2. Simplify the setup
More standardized modules => simplify platform decking and platform ends
3. Increase redundancy
Install net / catching system prior to any installation from deck level
Lanyarded tools to be dedicated to high risk work
Increase the level of supervision while performing high risk work
4. Improve working procedure
Reduce the quantity of exposed works => Isolate and identify high risk area…
Dedicated tools and crew to perform those works => Red zone tool box, dedicated crew…
Documents updated => Procedure, training, competency assessment…

5. Results obtained and wider adoption of the innovation
Major improvement : 25 000h used for modifications
Safety:
Ø No more spillage / waterproofing massively improved,
Ø Workers reduce exposure to a free edge,
Ø No loose item, no small items,
Ø Catching system under the entire platform,
⇒ Risk of falling object close to nil.
Productivity:
ü Standardizing and improving the platform is good for guys moral and productivity,
ü No more spotter required for spillage => 19 600h saved on project duration
ü Platform setup is faster than before => 11 760h saved on project duration
Client confidence:
ü Trust and confidence with Freyssinet
ü The client is impressed by the outstanding job done, ‘’ you’re going above and beyond industry standards.’’
ü We renegotiated the contract, extending the duration and increasing the contract sum: from 55 to 110Million AUD
Wider adoption:
ü This project is a benchmark for the company – safety wise – and the clients safety manager is using our project as an example for
their own future projects
