2. LQ: How do I apply the theories
of narrative to my Music video
Lesson Aims
◼To look at a variety of different approaches to
narrative and decide which one is useful for my own
work
◼To look at how I might apply theories of narrative

3. What is Narrative ?
What do you understand by the term ‘narrative’ ?
How is it different from ‘plot’ ?
Narrative can be difficult to apply to music video in
1 way – you are not always trying to tell a story but
create an image for a music star.
Goodwin and Vernallis recognise this so can be used
if applicable to your work.
But remember, this question is not a test of
whether your work has a narrative BUT whether you
understand narrative theory. So you could say that
Todorov’s theory is a standard theory of narrative
(and explain why) but your music video doesn’t follow
it (and explain how)

4. Reviewing your own work
Task:
I have emailed to you, and put onto the blog, a powerpoint
with different narrative theories.
1. Look through ALL the theories
2. Which ones best apply to your own work ?
3. Pick out quotes that are useful and note down the
theorists
4. Write notes that explain how they apply to your own work
(it can be that your work shows a CHALLENGE to the theory
– although do have at least 1 quote that is relevant to your
work
