Current 3D sensing technologies like lasers and cameras have limitations including high price, large size, errors from light conditions, and low mobility. Customers need a sensor that is robust, low priced, small sized, precise, ultra low power, and lightweight. Toposens has invented the first real-time 3D ultrasound sensor system that is less than 1,500 euros, smaller than consumer cameras, more accurate than lasers, and unaffected by errors or energy use. It works by emitting ultrasound signals and converting return times into a 3D map for applications like collision avoidance and gesture control.

Jessica Gehlhar, Vision Solutions Engineer at Edmund Optics, presents the "Introduction to Optics for Embedded Vision" tutorial at the May 2017 Embedded Vision Summit.
This talk provides an introduction to optics for embedded vision system and algorithm developers. Gehlhar begins by presenting fundamental imaging lens specifications and quality metrics. She explains key parameters and concepts such as field of view, f number, working f number, NA (numerical aperture), focal length, working distance, depth of field, depth of focus, resolution, MTF (modulation transfer function), distortion, keystoning, and telecentricity and their relationships. Optical design basics and trade-offs introduced include design types, aberrations, aspheres, pointing accuracy, sensor matching, color and protective coatings, filters, temperature and environmental considerations, and their relation to sensor artifacts.
She also explores manufacturing considerations, including testing the optical components and imaging lenses in a product, and the industrial optics used for a wide range of manufacturing tests. Depending on requirements, a wide variety of tests and calibrations may be performed. These tests and calibrations become important with designs that include technologies such as multi-camera, 3D, color and NIR (near-infrared).
Soli is one of the projects of Google ATAP.This project is headed by Ivan Poupyrev. Soli was announced at Google I/O 2015. Soli is a new gesture sensing technology for human-computer interaction. Soli is millimetre-wave radar that can detect micro motion of human hand.

Jon Stern, Director of Optical Systems at GoPro, presents the “Building the Eyes of a Vision System: From Photons to Bits” tutorial at the May 2021 Embedded Vision Summit.
In this tutorial, Stern presents a guide to the multidisciplinary science of building the eyes of a vision system. CMOS image sensors have been instrumental in lowering the barrier for embedding vision into systems. Their high degree of integration allows photons to be converted into bits with minimal support circuitry. Simple protocols and interfaces mean that companies can design camera-based systems with comparatively little specialist expertise.
To produce high-quality output, the image sensor and optics must be carefully co-optimized to fit the application. To assist with component selection and help avoid common pitfalls, Stern describes the key parameters and provides a practical guide to selecting both sensor and optics for a camera. He also provides an introduction to other hardware considerations and to correcting optical aberrations in the image processing pipeline.

Jon Stern, Director of Optical Systems at GoPro, presents the “Building the Eyes of a Vision System: From Photons to Bits” tutorial at the May 2021 Embedded Vision Summit.
In this tutorial, Stern presents a guide to the multidisciplinary science of building the eyes of a vision system. CMOS image sensors have been instrumental in lowering the barrier for embedding vision into systems. Their high degree of integration allows photons to be converted into bits with minimal support circuitry. Simple protocols and interfaces mean that companies can design camera-based systems with comparatively little specialist expertise.
To produce high-quality output, the image sensor and optics must be carefully co-optimized to fit the application. To assist with component selection and help avoid common pitfalls, Stern describes the key parameters and provides a practical guide to selecting both sensor and optics for a camera. He also provides an introduction to other hardware considerations and to correcting optical aberrations in the image processing pipeline.
