After the story of Khai Thinh Co., Ltd., Ms. Tran Thi Hanh explain why it’s important to have knowledge and, be aware of all disaster risk and consequences of climate change for a company. The fact that this lack of understanding can be solved by taking training course and that business and entrepreneurs can “spend a small amount but […] protect a huge amount of assets” is highlight. Khai Thinh Co., Ltd. is a company specializing in
carrying passengers using marine transport from
Rach Gia, Phan Thiet to Phu Quoc and Phu Quy island.
The company had owned a Savanna ship, which was
the most modern in Vietnam, with tonnage that could
transport up to 270 passengers. The ship was designed
to withstand strong wind of level 7, with young staff
who were highly skilled in fire protection. But unfortu-
nately, an extremely strong tornado caused a shipwreck
about 1.5 knots from the Phan Thiet coast at 4:30 AM,
1st March 2014 (See more information about the sinking

After this disaster risk, the company registered for the
course on disaster risk management which was held by
the Center for Development Support of Small and Medi-
um Enterprise 2 (SMEDEC 2). “Even though the duration
of the training was only 2 days, I’ve learned a lot of im-
portant information to prevent disasters in the future.
Through the training, I realized that natural disasters are
unpredictable and human life should be the top prior-
ity for protection. Creating scenario cases and specific
protection plans prioritizing the vulnerable groups such
as the elderly, children, and pregnant women should be
done. Despite the loss of property, which was up to $ 3
million, fortunately there were no fatalities or injuries.

“Before attending VCCI’s training course (2013), the
company’s prevention options are spontaneous, awk-
ward, and unorganized. After the training, we learned
how to develop a professional management plan for
each kind of disaster and inform and train each employ-
ee. Since then, Viettronimex has not suffered any dam-
age due to natural disasters, even though it spends only
about 20 million VND each year to protect the assets of
300 billion VND.”
After the survey and consulting, all three supermarkets
of Viettrolimex, Da Nang, have completed their own
disaster risk management plans and specific options.
Enterprises purchased disaster insurance and set up a
disaster prevention fund. In addition to informative and
training excercises, 850 m2 of total area of 6500 m2 are
maintained annually. Viettronimex’s storm prevention
capacity is now able to withstand storms up to level 12.

“Disaster risk does not leave anyone out. Entrepreneurs
and businesses need to be aware of it and seriously con-
sider developing detailed plans for disaster risk manage-
ment and organize it. Only spending a small amount will
be enough to protect a significant amount of business
assets. Furthermore, it is more important to protect
your employees and customers in a disaster.” According
to Viettronimex Supermarket, Da Nang
Measures to prevent water overflow at manholes:
- The drainage system in the area exits the external sys-
tem of the area through the manholes collecting water.
These manholes should be constructed so that in case
of high tides, it’s will not flow back into the inner drain-
age system of the area.
- To ensure that water does not flow back into the re-
gion's trench system, water blocking measure, as pic-
tured below, is a simple solution in construction and
operation, with a low cost and efficient to use. Busi-
nesses can also refer to more manholes which are de-
signed against overflow and currently on the market.

75% of the areas flooded in Ho Chi Minh City were not
due to high tide, but due to the drainage capacity of
most rainwater drainage systems which only experi-
enced 80mm rainfall (about 3 hours of continuous rain).

"From the perspective of IZ management, through training, I highly appreciate the
method taught by the project lecturers, with high interactivity, focus on a practice,
learner-centered approach. The lecturers did not use jargon, but used practical ex-
ercises and examples from real business and group discussions, direct interactions,
which is a good method of training and brings good results. Although learners
have different backgrounds and come from different companies and departments,
it was still possible to discuss and contribute to the specific plans. Although the
training took place during only 1 day, I think that if the enterpris-
es had better preparation, the training time can be shortened
while efficiency is still ensured. Managers will gradually learn
and apply this method to our own training courses in our Indus-

30/9/2016: The Management Board of Quang Nam Industrial
Park cooperated with Dien Nam - Dien Ngoc Industrial Park, Fire Prevention, Fight-
ing and Rescue Police Department to organize the fire prevention and fire fighting
techniques integrated with Disaster preparedness and prevention and Search and
Rescue for 18 enterprises with nearly 300 employees at Dien Nam - Dien Ngoc
Industrial Park to raise awareness and responsibility.

Upcoming activities
VCCI
In 12/2016, VCCI organized a forum on climate change and disaster risk man-
agement for 150 delegates from enterprises and relevant organizations in Da
Nang. This was the second one in a series of four workshops on this topic,
which was part of the preparation for the White Paper on the response of
businesses to disaster risk and adaptation to climate change.
From November to December 2016: VCCI conducted in-depth interviews with
a number of enterprises on responses to climate change adaptation. The re-
sults of the interview provided input for the White Paper on the responses of
businesses to disaster risk and climate change adaptation.
SMEDEC2
A continuation of the workshop on “Raising awareness on climate change and
Disaster Risk Management in SMEs in Vietnam for university students in Ho
Chi Minh City.” In addition, the second meeting of the Disaster Risk Manage-
ment Trainer Club for enterprises will be held. Short films will be developed
as a communication activity to the business community through VTV.

Complete training activities and work with IP Management Boards (50%
of the project completed). Upcoming activities will include translating and
launching the English website of http://ungphothientai.com to provide infor-
mation to organizations and enterprises in the region, as well as prepare for
the volume 3 of the e-newsletter
