Extended Step Outline Debriefing
1. Extended Step-Outline Analysis and Debrief.
I looked into multiple crime and thriller movies such as the Taken series and Now YouSee Me,
and these films were the inspiration to the genre and storyline of my extended step outline. The
original plot to my piece was to have Isaac turn sociopathic and hunt downthe people who
wouldn'taccept his innocence. But a lot of the micro elements used to convey the scenes were
rather enigmatic and held a double meaning, and many of them – Specifically the lighting in the
fifthscene – worked far better if Isaac remained an innocent character. After I decided this, I
began to create meanings within my other micro-elements, and I explored different ways to
convey certain messages to the audience.
I did some colour research for the mise-en-scène of the third scene, where the clothing
portrayed the characters through the colourof their outfits. This workedeffectively as a similar
device of white clothing portraying innocence was used in Bullet Boy. The tattoos were also
looked into when I studied different types of notorious criminals and external features that
they had in common. Stereotypically, they were tattoos, piercings and quite broad builds.
Another way in which I began to develop secondary meanings of my extended step outline was
in the second scene; the flashback that helps explain the reality behind what disrupted the
narrative. To do this, I used sound elements to my advantage; one part I was particularly
pleased with was the whitenoise which overtookthe diegetic cheering of the audience, as that
mirrored the assistant’s condition moments before collapsing and provided an insight to the
audience to indicate that something within the plot wasn’t happening. This created the effectof
dramatic irony, where the audience of the film would be aware of what was happening, but the
onscreen audience would not. Another particular scene that I am please with is the fifth.I
enjoyed the direction this part took, because it was then that the thriller genre became much
clearer with the use of the lighting and sound combined. I used a variety of ways to help suggest
whichplaces and whichcharacters would be ‘active’ in the narrative. To do this, I used high key
lighting in the reception of the apartment blocksto develop a feeling of a safety haven, which
likely wouldhave been used more often in the plot.
The editing in scene four wasn’t as easy to convey messages as I had hoped, as editing isn’t my
strong suit when it comes to creating deeper meanings within the clips.
However,I did attempt to convey some messages through different editing transitions, such as
the graphics match between scene two and four to suggest the passing of time. As well as that, I
used a jump cut whichis an editing transition the audience becomes aware of in order to make
this scene in particular feel surreal to the audience.
I enjoyed focusing on my micro-elements, but I felt that some of my scenes were deeper than
others, in terms of their meaning.
I tooka lot of inspiration fromdifferent scenes of films, as I wanted to be able to display similar
meanings and messages. From Taken, scene five was inspired by the ‘I willfind You’ phone call –
as were the micro elements of lighting and sound. The lowkey lighting created a sense of Isaac
being endangered and also helped the extended step outline’s genres become far clearer. In
doing so, this was the other scene where I also used sound to a similar format of Scene Two.I
2. wanted the fifthscene to be the peak of the extended step outline’s suspense, so using a non-
diegetic phone ring proved beneficial in helping to startle the audience.
If I could have improved this extended step outline, I wouldhave started further on in the film
or perhaps near the climax, as there would have been much more meaning to talk about and it
would have allowedme to explore new waysof conveyingmessages. So one thing I would
change about this wouldbe to start later on in the story and have perhaps more peaks and troffs
or even start around the climax of the film.
Overall, I'mquite pleased with the way my deeper meanings were suggested in my extended
step outline, though I do believe some factorsof the micro-elements are easier than others, and I
will bear that in mind.
