SPECIES SPOTLIGHT
BLUE-CROWNED
MOTMOT
Momotus momota
Appearance
These motmots sport turquoise
crowns, black masks and bodies
coated with shades of green and
blue. Their tails have distinctive
racquet-like tips that they move
back and forth like a pendulum
while perching.
Behavior
These birds of a feather don’t
flock together, but live in pairs
throughout the year. The
males of a pair can even be
observed feeding their female
counterparts.
Reproduction
Blue-crowned Motmots build
nesting tunnels up to 14 feet in
length. Both sexes participate in
nest building, incubation and
other parental responsibilities.
