The document discusses genre theory from three theorists: Steve Neale, David Buckingham, and John Fiske. Steve Neale's theory states that films must comply with genre conventions while also subverting them to be unique. David Buckingham believes genres are constantly negotiated and changing according to society. John Fiske's theory is that genre structures media texts and meanings for producers and audiences, and people categorize their lives based on media genres.
3. Theory
Tia Kamel
''Genres are instances of repetition and
difference''
''Difference is absolutely essential to the
economy of genre''

Steve Neale's theory states that a film consists of two things:
-How a film complies with the stereotypes of convention and genre and
-How much the film subverts genre's conventions and stereotypes.
This means, a film must satisfy the genres rules enough to still be recognized
as a film from that specific genre. However, it must be represented differently
to other films within that genre. As well as, being different to the rules of the
genre, enough to be classified as unique.
6. Theory
Tia Kamel
''Genre is not simply 'given' by the culture:
rather, it is in a constant state of negotiation
and change."

David Buckingham believes that genres change over time and are molded
constantly by society. Also that children and young people have identities that
do not exist at all or are constantly changing. He also believed that media
reveals the bad side of the world leading to parents keeping their children
indoors to hide them from this reality .
9. Theory
Tia Kamel
“Genre attempts to structure some order into
the wide range of texts and meanings that
circulate in our culture for the convenience of
both producers and audiences”

John Fiske's theory is that people will categorize events that occur in their lives
with references to what they see in the media. He mentions that genre is a way
of categorising texts in media and prepares audiences expectations. Genre is
made up of conventions which are the typical features that belong to the
genre such as the setting and events. These conventions construct the genre
and are constantly repeated through each movie that fall into the category.
