REGION HONORS
By Thomas C. Tripp, Sports Writer for The Carolinian
On Thursday, December 5th, Linebacker Chaz Robinson and Defensive End Shonquez
Nelson, both Seniors of Saint Augustine’s University, were named to the 2013 Darktronics All-
Super Region 1 Football team. The region’s sports information directors were responsible for
the selections and nominations of the first and second teams.
Robinson, from Hampton, VA, was the third player in Falcons history to win the CIAA
Defensive Player of the Year. He joined Tyrone Pettway (2005) and Kevin Jones (2006) . All
three were coached by Head Coach, Michael Costa, who also serves as the linebackers coach.
Costa said of Robinson, “He is a very hard-working, dedicated, loyal and sincere young man
with the desire to achieve greatness.” He added, “It is truly a blessing to have young men who
really want to learn the position and improve upon their skills.” He is the most prolific tackler in
Falcons history, setting the St. Aug career (407) and single-season(126) tackles record, in the
2013 season. A sport management major, Robinson also recorded four blocked kicks. He shared
the CIAA co-defensive player of the year with Carlos Fields of Winston-Salem State University.
Robinson’s Falcons teammate, Defensive End Shonquez Nelson, was also honored to the
all-CIAA First Team. He established himself as one of the top defensive linemen in the nation
this season. He ranks second in Division II in sacks (13) and sacks per game (1.3) in addition to
tying the school record for sacks in a single season. The CIAA leader in sacks and sacks per
game, Nelson completed his college career third (25) in the Falcons’ all-time sack list. A biology
major, he was tied for second on the team, with 65 tackles in the 2013 season.
