More than Just Lines on a Map: Best Practices for U.S Bike Routes
Feedback from Staff at AECOM
1. Aaron Howell – Davis Langdon
(Monday 11th
February – 2pm to 3pm)
“Tom is a very polite individual who took an interest in the subject that we were talking about. He was
also enthusiastic and raised important questions where appropriate, which helped demonstrate his
understanding and learning relating to the profession.”
Sarah Milne – Environment
(Monday 11th
February – 3pm to 3.45pm)
“Tom clearly grasped the concepts of how our multi-disciplinary teams can work together and problem
solve for clients. He demonstrated a good knowledge of how his A Level physics and geography
studies could be applied to development challenges, and particularly showed an interest in how
design can be sustainable. He was very polite and keen to learn.
I would be happy to answer any further questions he may have on career paths.”
Mark Rowney – Environment (Geo-Tech)
(Monday 11th
February – 3.45pm to 4.45pm)
“Gave a good impression, polite, enthusiastic and engaged. Asked relevant questions and
demonstrated a quick grasp of the subject material.”
Faber Jeddere-Fisher + Richard Tetlow – Sustainability
(Tuesday 12th
February – 2pm to 4.30pm)
“I thought he was polite, enthusiastic, and quickly understood the tasks that we gave him to do. He
showed a good understanding of the importance of considering occupant satisfaction not just after a
building has been completed but also during the initial design process.”
Richard”
“I echo Rich’s comments. Particularly about his enthusiasm and politeness.
We had a slightly different task for him to do, than the one we usually do, and he engaged with it very
well.
It was a pleasure to work with him!
Fabia”
George Lunt – Transportation
(Wednesday 13th
February – 2pm to 4.30pm)
“Friendly, and seemed interested in the work we were doing.
Asked questions on his task which was good, although struggled slightly to get the roads to go in the
right direction. Probably not helped by my explanations!
We ran out of time in the end which was a shame...
George”

2. Jen Pryke + Jon Sparks – Building Services
(Thursday 14th
February – 2pm to 4.30pm)
“Tom was a very attentive work experience student, and completed the thermal modelling task
competently grasping the methodology of building the 3D model and was able to work through the
task independently (but asking questions when necessary). He asked intelligent questions throughout
the time I spent with him – hopefully he may consider building services as a branch of engineering for
the future.
Jen”
“I thought he was enthusiastic, showed interest, was polite and well mannered.
Jon”
Alex Smith – Structures
(Monday 11th
, Tuesday 12th
, Wednesday 13th
, Thursday 14th
& Friday 15th
9am to 1pm)
“Methodical with tasks provided, quick to learn, very polite, shows genuine interest in engineering.
Not fazed by being given complex tasks.
Would benefit from asking more questions, particularly to appreciate the depth of detail to go into for
each of the tasks set.
As the week progressed Tom did learn to ask more questions when unsure about how to progress
with the task which greatly benefitted the end results.
A course on mechanics within both maths and physics classes would be required if considering a
career in structural engineering to appreciate equilibrium etc and help him decide whether he would
like to take a path towards this profession.”
