“Carpe Diem” Scholarship/Bucks County Foundation
The Cole T. Ballay “Carpe Diem”
Memorial Scholarship Fund
is awarded to a Central Bucks East
Senior soccer player who exhibits
passion and positive leadership
among his teammates. The
scholarship was established by Nan
and Tom Ballay in memory of their son, Cole, who
was tragically killed in an automobile accident in
2008. Cole played soccer for CB East and was a
junior soccer star at Germantown Academy where
he was a three year starter, as well as a captain
and All-Inter-AC honoree.
“For me soccer is more than a hobby or past time.
It is an anti-‐drug; a way of making new friends;
a way of expanding my views and aspects of life,
and more importantly, it is the core of my being.
When I think about something that I
feel passionate about, one word comes
to mind, soccer.” “…How could one
game consisting of a ball, 22 players,
and a net, mean so much to me? I
have no answer to this
question, but whatever it is, I will
continue to do it until the end of my days. I am
Cole Ballay, a young man, and I love soccer!”
–Excerps of an essay written by Cole T. Ballay, 2004 (age 13)
“…although life seems short and our lives at times
seem insignificant…many opportunities for greatness
will arise throughout the course of life…A greater
understanding of life’s deeper events is only fully
acquired by taking time out and appreciating life’s
smaller events. Carpe Diem!!!”

In July 1982, the Central Bucks Patriots lost one of its finest soccer alumni when Eddie Copeland died in
an automobile accident at the Jersey Shore. In his memory, his friends, Vince Tranchitella, Gwyn Graham,
Dave Orphanides, Dave Dardzinski, Mark Eisold, Phil Johnston, Shannon Clark, Kevin Fisher, Kevin Wilson,
and Robert Yelnosky organized a 23 hour soccer marathon that raised money for the first Edward Copeland
Scholarship. Since 1983, there have been thirty recipients of the $1,000 scholarship award which combines
athletic, academic and social success: qualities exemplified by Eddie himself. Each year’s scholarship winner
is chosen by his teammates and awarded at East’s Soccer Banquet. The award continues to be a source of pride
and achievement for soccer players at Central Bucks East.

5 Teams to Watch
(listed in order of strength)
North Penn: The Knights were very close to the SOL
Continental title last year and they have more returning
talent than any team in the conference, so they enter as
the preseason favorite. Finding someone to replace 17-goal
scorer Dylan McMahon is the biggest question mark NP
faces as the year gets under way.
CB East: The Patriots always seem to graduate a boatload
of talented players and face a certain amount of rebuilding
but, by midseason, they are a very tough team to beat. A
year ago, East won its fifth conference title in six years,
but saw its state playoff run end with a penalty-kick loss in
districts.
Archbishop Wood: Veteran coach Joe Krantz said he
thinks this is one of the best technical teams he’s had in
years, led by a pair of All-Catholic players in keeper Ryan
Hemsley and forward Kevin Joyce, and a defender in Dave
Bateman, who played for the PDA Academic program last
year. The Vikings may be one of the favorites in the PCL.
CB South: Despite graduating its fair share of talented
players from a year ago, the Titans will restock quickly.
Danny Remick is a multi-year starter and sophomore mid-
fielder Colin Fagan was a third-team all-conference players
and a seven-goal scorer as a freshman. South should be in
the SOL Continental mix.
William Tennent: Ryan Todt takes over as the Panthers’
new coach, and he has a big task with only six players
returning. But five sophomores started on last year’s
district quarterfinal team, and they’re all back, led by
second-team all-conference pick Conner Weis, as well as
Mark Palage and Julian Amaro.
5 Players to Watch
(listed alphabetically)
Dave Bateman, Archbishop Wood: Last season, Bateman
played for the Player Development Academy (PDA) team
in New Jersey and has been listed among the top 150
recruits in the nation for 2015. He’ll be a big boost for the
Vikings’ defense.
Scott Jacobs, Lansdale Catholic: One of the top defen-
sive players in the Philadelphia Catholic League as a junior,
Jacobs was a first-team All-Catholic selection for an LC
team that went 13-7-1. He’ll lead a very good Crusaders
defense this season.
Drew McMenamin, North Penn: The only first-team
all-conference underclassman a year ago, McMenamin is the
top returning player in the Continental Conference. He leads
a talented defensive unit that should make scoring against
the Knights very difficult.
Danny Remick, CB South: As a junior, Remick had six
goals and five assists for 17 points, the leading scorer on
a good South squad. He’ll draw a lot of attention for the
Titans this season and is poised for a big year.
Evan Vare, CB East: After starting as a freshman, Vare
came into his own as a sophomore with 11 goals and 13
assists, making him the top returning scorer in all of the
Suburban One League, and he’s still just a junior.

Continental Conference Players to Watch
Evan Vare, junior forward, Central Bucks East: In 2013,
Vare scored 11 goals and led the league with 13 assists
(35 points). A starter since midway through his freshman
season, he was a second team all-league forward for an East
squad that captured the Continental
Conference title.
Coach Mike Gorni says: “He’s very,
very quick with the ball. He has a good
shot—he has a good shot both from
distance and in tight especially, slash-
ing towards goal. He’s probably the
best player in the air on our team, so he
gets a lot of head ball goals. He’s not a
big kid, but he jumps out of the house.
He really gets good altitude for someone who’s not a
tall player.”
Central Bucks East: Evan Vare, junior forward; Booker
Farrior, senior defender.

J.R. Eisold scored 10 minutes into the game, sparking a 6-0
scoring run by the Patriots in a deadly 15-minute span, and
Friday’s opener was over almost before it began.
“That won’t happen very often in the course of our year,”
coach Mike Gorni said. “It was a good win. We got a lot of
kids in and got to rest our starters because we have back-to-
back games tomorrow with Springford.”
Stephen Sheehan scored a pair of goals while Evan Vare,
Andrew Walters and Julian Klokner each added single
goals for the Patriots, who made the road trip to East
Stroudsburg.
“They did us a favor last year because we lost a game on our
schedule, and we needed a fill in,” Gorni said. “They came all
the way down to play us, so we went all the way up to play
them.”

Klokner’s Accidental Goal
Lifts C.B. East
Kate Harman, ForTheInquirer
Published Saturday, September 6, 2014, 1:08 AM
It was intended to be a far post service.
As the ball left the foot of Julian Klokner, that is exactly
what it looked like: a great scoring opportunity for the
Central Bucks East boys’ soccer team.
Instead, the ball found its way to the back of the net.
When it deflected off the post and went in, it surprised
the Patriots so much that they didn’t really celebrate.
Minus any hoopla, Klokner’s strike within the first five
minutes of the game was all C.B. East needed Friday after-
noon, as the Patriots won their fourth straight game.
They defeated North Penn, 1-0, in a Suburban One
Continental contest.
“I just got lucky and it went in, but we will take that all day,”
said Klokner, a midfielder.
The Patriots were still talking about
the goal as they went over to find some
postgame shade.
“I was just sitting
there far post, thinking I would knock
it in,” one player remarked.
“I didn’t think it went in,” another add-
ed, the team all smiles and tired legs
after the conference battle.
What was senior defender Booker
Farrior’s reaction to the goal from his vantage point in the
back?
“Niiiice, really nice,” Farrior said.
Things are going nicely for the Patriots this season, as C.B.
East has scored 11 goals in four games, allowing zero in
that span.
“We are staying compact. We are really talking. We are
really jelling as a team,” Farrior said. “We are starting to get
the vibe.”
It was the second game in less than 24 hours for the Patriots-
—a fact the Knights used to their advantage in the midfield,
as they earned a lot of possessions to set up the attack.
But even with several players putting in 80 minutes for
the second straight day, the C.B. East defense held, thanks
in part to some sharp goalkeeping from Austin Prime. He
finished with five saves.
“We just have to forget all of this and start back from 0-0
again,” Klokner said.
