A history of warp films
1. Warp films was established by Rob Mitchell and
Steve Beckett who were the founders of warp
records and had financial support from the
National Endowment for Science, Technology and
the Arts (or NESTA for short) and through this
support produced a number of short films.
Despite the death of Rob Mitchell on the 8th
of
October 2001 the company still kept going and
Steve Beckett hired his close friend Mark Herbert
to run the company instead.
The company started of strong and made the film
My Wrongs#8245-8249 & 117 which starred Paddy
Considine (who would be a key player for Warp
Films) which won the award for Best Short Film at
the 2003 BAFTA Film Awards and became the first
short film DVD single in the UK film market which
evidently was a good start for the up and coming
company.
2. They then began to make more critically acclaimed
films such as Dead man’s shoes which was
directed by Shane Meadows (another key player of
Warp Films) who met Mark Herbert through Paddy
Considine and although these films were getting
critical acclaim they were not getting any
semblance of wide spread recognition until Shane
Meadows second film for the company came out,
This is England came out.
It was able to ascertain multiple awards such as
Best Film at the British Independent Films Awards,
the Special Jury Prize at the Rome Film Festival
and Best British Film at the BAFTAs making it
Warp films 2nd
BAFTA winning film.
This gave the company the exposure needed and
the assurance of a market of a people willing and
wanting to watch the content they were producing.
At the same ceremony that won them their 3rd
BAFTA.
And have continued to be successful since.
