10. What is DOI?
A DOI, or Digital Object Identifier, is a string of numbers,
letters and symbols used to permanently identify an article
or document and link to it on the web.
DOIs are usually placed on the first page of
a journal article.
If not, search on the website CrossRef.org
(use the "Search Metadata" option)
11. What is the use of DOI?
A DOI will help your reader easily locate a document from
your citation.
For example, if you type
https://doi.org/10.1007/s10953-008-9317-8 in Google,
you will be directly taken to the paper page

22. Impact Factor
Journal impact factor gives the average number of citations
that articles in a journal are referenced by other articles.
Impact factors were conceptualized by Eugene Garfield and
Irving H Sher in the 1960s as an aid to evaluating journals for
inclusion in Current Contents® and the Science Citation
Index®.
Impact factors have been adopted for use as measures of
journal quality based on the fact that: “the value of information
is determined by those who use it”, the idea being that the
value of a journal can be measured by the number of times its
use is formalized in the form of a citation.
23. How is the impact factor calculated?
number of citations in 2022 to articles
Impact factor = published in 2020 and 2021 in the Journal
number of articles published in 2020 and 2021
in the Journal
24. How is the impact factor calculated?
5
For example, the 2007 impact factor for Advances in Physics was calculated as follows:
Citations in 2007 to articles published in Advances in Physics in 2005 = 115
Citations in 2007 to articles published in Advances in Physics in 2006 = 86
Total citations received in 2007 to articles published in 2005 and 2006 = 201
Number of articles published in Advances in Physics in 2005 = 12
Number of articles published in Advances in Physics in 2006 = 9
Total number of articles published in 2005 and 2006 = 21
25. Q1 to Q4 Journals
Web of Science ranks journals in four categories
Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4.
These categories are based on the Impact Factor(IF) and
Eigenfactor Score (ES) of each journal.
Q1 journals are considered the most prestigious
and have the highest IF and ES scores.

34. What is the h index?
J.E. Hirsch introducted ‘h‘ index in 2005
The h index is a metric for evaluating the cumulative impact
of an author’s scholarly output and performance; measures
quantity with quality by comparing publications to citations.
How Calculated: Number of papers (h) that have received
at least h citations.
35. What is the h index of
Dr. J. Thimmasetty?
14 Papers published by the
author has 14 or more
citations and the remaining
have less than 14 citations
each

38. What is the i10 index?
Created by Google Scholar and used in Google's My
Citations feature.
i10-Index is the number of publications with at least 10
citations.
This very simple measure is only used by Google Scholar,
and is another way to help gauge the productivity of a
scholar.
Advantages of i10-Index
• Very simple and straightforward to calculate
• My Citations in Google Scholar is free and easy to use
39. What is the i10 index of
Dr. J. Thimmasetty?
15 Papers published by the
author has more than 10
citations and the remaining
have less than 10 citations
each
40.
41. What is the G-index?
The G-index was proposed by Leo Egghe in 2006 as an
improvement on the H-Index.
G-Index is the largest number such that the top g articles
received (together) at least g2 citations.
Advantages
• Accounts for the performance of author's top articles
• Helps to make more apparent the difference between
authors' respective impacts. The inflated values of the G-
Index help to give credit to lowly-cited or non-cited
papers while giving credit for highly-cited papers.
Disadvantages
• Might not be as widely accepted as H-Index.
42. How to calculate G-index?
G G2 Citations Cumulative citations G-index
1 1 100 100 No
2 4 91 191 No
3 9 43 234 No
4 16 35 269 No
5 25 34 303 No
6 36 33 336 No
7 49 26 362 No
8 64 26 388 No
9 81 23 411 No
10 100 20 431 No
11 121 13 444 No
12 144 10 454 No
13 169 8 462 No
14 196 8 470 No
43. How to calculate G-index?
G G2 Citations Cumulative citations G-index
15 225 7 477 No
16 256 7 484 No
17 289 6 490 No
18 324 6 496 No
19 361 5 501 No
20 400 5 506 No
21 441 4 510 No
22 484 4 514 Yes
23 529 3 517 No
24 3 520 No
25 2 522 No
26 1 523 No
27 1 524 No
For 512 citations, G-index is 22, since G2 value for 23 is more than 517
44.
45. What is referencing?
Referencing is a standardized way of
acknowledging the sources of information and
ideas that you have used in your assignments and
which allows the sources to be identified.
It is important to be consistent when you are
referencing.
46. Why Do We Cite and Reference?
When writing any thesis, paper, report or assignment, you
need to highlight your use of other author's ideas and
words so that you:
• Give the original author credit for their own ideas and work.
• Validate your arguments.
• Enable the reader to follow up on the original work if they wish to.
• Enable the reader to see how updated the information might be.
• Prove to your tutors/lecturers that you have read around the subject.
• Avoid plagiarism.
47. Difference between
a reference list and a bibliography
Reference list Bibliography
A reference list contains details only of
those works cited in the text of the
document. (e.g. book, journal article,
pamphlet, internet site, etc.). These
details must include sufficient detail so
that others may locate and consult
your references.
A bibliography lists sources not
cited in the text but which are
relevant to the subject and were
used for background reading.
A reference list should appear at the
end of essay/report with the entries
listed numerically and in the same
order that they have been cited in the
text.
A bibliography is a separate list of
sources and should be arranged
alphabetically by author or title
(where no author is given).
48. Referencing Styles
APA (American Psychological Association)
MLA (Modern Language Association)
CMS (Chicago Manual Style)
MHRA (Modern Humanities Research Association)
NZVJ (New Zealand Vet Journal Reference style)
Oxford
Harvard
Vancouver
Etc.
49. What is Vancouver referencing style?
The Vancouver style of referencing is predominantly used in the
medical field.
When referencing your work in the Vancouver style, it is very
important that you use the right punctuation and that the order of
details in the reference is also correct.
In this style, the journal titles used in the references are
abbreviated from an authoritative list.
A reference list at the end of the assignment contains the full
details of all the in-text citations
50. Example – Journal Article
Number of authors More than six authors
Elements of the
Citation
First Six Author(s) followed by et al. Title of

Follow trend of journal. ( ), [ ], (xyz, 2020), 1
Spell author name properly he or she may be one of
reviewers and he/she would not like if their name is written
wrong.
Don’t forget to cite latest and relevant references.
Do not use self-references very much. You can use one or
two depending upon the need, but don’t overuse self-
