3. MARKET WRAP
Nifty and Sensex both gain significantly; up 0.8% -1.6% this week.
U.S. Unemployment claims came at 365K; Unemployment rate at 8.1%.
U.S. & Euro markets have been green; Asian markets were mixed.
Indian stock indices gained 1.5% during the week, mainly due to a powerful rally on
Friday, after the ECB President delivered on the promise made by him recently in its
fight against the three-year-old debt turmoil. It may be recalled that Indian indices had
snapped a four-week winning streak last Friday on worries that policy paralysis will
continue to be a major headwind for the Indian economy and markets. Technically Nifty
is having support at lower levels, Nifty may range 5150-5500 this week.
India's government said it has not taken any call on hiking the fuel prices, including
petrol, as has been reported in some section of the press in the past couple of days.
Next week will be an important one again, as markets will react to the latest IIP and WPI
inflation numbers. Globally, the key event to keep on oneโs radar will be the two-day
FOMC policy meeting. ECB President Draghi has kept its promise on monetary
stimulus.
European Central Bank's pledge to buy the debt of troubled eurozone countries this
week the Fed is widely expected to introduce new stimulus measure in the form of more
bond buying (positive vibrations generated by the ECB monetary stimulus and the
impending QE3 from the Federal Reserve) when it closes its two-day meeting on
Thursday. While the strong global liquidity has lifted the main indices of late, China's
passenger vehicle sales continued to recover third-highest yoy growth in 20 months.
