1. HOW DID MY FILM OPENING ENGAGE
MY AUDIENCE AND HOW WOULD I
DISTRIBUTE IT?
Jake Cooper
2. WHO IS MY TARGET AUDIENCE?
• A target audience is defined as ‘a particular
group at which a product such as a film or
advertisement is aimed’ through researching
extensively into audiences I learned that they are
socially profiled by brands in many different
ways. For example, demographics, age, gender
and social status.
• To reach our target audiences, we had to create
different strategies in order to engage. We
addressed this with factors which would attract
our audience directly.
• Our target audience is mostly the ages between
15-30. Even though the 12A rating is present, the
target age is 15+.
3. DO THE CHARACTERS IN MY FILM
APPEAL TO MY AUDIENCE?
• It is evident to the audience that there is a main protagonist within the
film; the Health Minister. He is seen as the main character and the man
to point the finger at. He appears at the first focal point of the movie
(coming after the build up scenes). With other characters such as the
government biologists and the exchange students being involved with
the virus directly, they are significant and appeal to the audience due to
their energy and youthful age.
4. AUDIENCE QUESTIONNAIRE
• I created an audience
questionnaire in order to get a
stronger idea about my target
audiences viewing habits as well
as previous viewing . This
helped me to identify favorite
genres, movie types, similar
movies and contrasting movies.
With their interest at our
disposal, we could engage them
with similar aspects of our own
film/product.
7. AUDIENCE PROFILE
• My film incorporates multiple genres
which might not usually be put together.
An example of this is the genres: Crime,
Thriller, Comedy, Action, Adventure.
This is a large array of genres all
incorporated in one movie. This allows for
the film to suit multiple audiences,
therefore, allowing for the movie to be
more popular when screening. Examples
of brands are Nando's, YouTube,
Santander, Monzo, Nike.
Some of the logos are displayed above.
I will target my audience to viewers within the age
bracket of 15-35. It will also appeal to those of any
class, social and economic state and
ethnicity. Viewers who fit into my target audience
are likely to enjoy action, adventure and crime
movies. Examples of these movies are:
Skyfall
Kingsman: Secret Service
Baby Driver
The Fugitive
My target audience is very likely to use platforms
such as Netflix, NOWTV and Amazon Prime to view
their favourite movies at any given time.
8. ROLE OF THE DISTRIBUTOR
• Kezia Williams is a Managing Director, UK, Film at Entertainment One at Entertainment One. She has over 17
years in the film industry and she provided me with knowledge about making a movie stand out from others
giving it a unique edge. Kezia Williams explained that, in a congested marketplace, a distributors aim was to
position a film in a way that it stood out for its target audiences. Similarly, Chris Besseling offered me a series
of insights into how distributors market a film's USP (Unique Selling Point) such as its star cast, its provenance
(such as literary adaptation or biopic credentials), its awards and good reviews. I watched a presentation by
Kezia Williams, where she explains how distributors work to create a successful marketing campaign for each
film.
• A successful distributor is responsible for marketing the film. The distribution company is usually different from
the production company.
• Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience.
