The document compares and contrasts the genres, intended audiences, and writing styles of four different media sources: The Guardian newspaper aims to inform adults with formal, unbiased reporting on serious issues; Match of the Day magazine entertains younger sports fans with less complex writing and videos; the Apple website promotes its products in a biased and exaggerated way to sell technology to consumers; and all sources vary in formality, humor, complexity of language and level of bias depending on their intended audience and purpose.
2. The guardian
Factual genre
• The guardian is a website which offers huge amounts of information
about what's going on in the world with news stories covering
celebrities, sport, music, politics and much more. It even tells you the
weather.
3. The Guardian
• The text is very formal with correct punctuation and grammar, it does
not shorten words and it is very educational. Unlike other newspapers
such as the sun, this news paper is usually less humorous and more
serious covering the serious news world wide. The reason for the
guardian being educational and formal with more sophisticated words is
because it is aimed at older ages (adults) who have more knowledge
than children and are more interested in the news stories. However
younger ages can also read if they so please as they may also be
interested and as I said before there are stories about sports, games,
fashion, celebrities and other subjects which might interest children. As it
is a newspaper it shows both sides of a story from different people it
never picks a side so it is neither biased or un biased. For example in
politics the writer will never pick a side they will just give information
from different point of views. An example of this is shown on the next
slide of the PowerPoint.
4. The below text is from the Guardian talking about politics and as you can
see the writer never picks a side they are nether biased or un based. They
don’t even give their opinion and the reason for this is because if someone
does not agree with what the newspapers say it could cause conflict and
give them a bad reputation which they don’t want so to avoid this they
simply don’t pick a side. As you can also see from reading this story it is
not humorous and it is very educational, formal and has sophisticated
words.
5. • This is another news story which I have taken from the guardian and
as you can see the tittle is San serifs it has no semi-structural details
or small decorative flourishes on the ends of some of the strokes that
make up letters and symbols. However an opposite of this being Serif
be the Times New Roman font.
San serifs Serif
6. Match of the day magazine
Sport genre
This is the Match of the day magazine. Unlike the guardian this is a E-magazine
which is aimed at a younger audience as kids/teenagers are typically reading
magazines over newspapers. This magazine focuses on football it is a sport
magazine. As you can see in the photo Anthony Martial scoring against Everton for
the wining goal in the 92 minute FA cup Wembley even though Everton should of
won as they played much better and they should have had a player sent off for a foul
on Ross. As you can see the text is san serif. And there is also videos featured on
the E-magazine.
7. Match of the day magazine
• The text is not very complicated and it is not hard to read as it is
aimed at a younger audience because the youth is the target
audience and it is a magazine, unlike the Guardian which is aimed at
an older audience which is why it is more educational and uses more
grammar. There is even videos which is pacific for school students,
for example there is a video that gives 5 tips to school students in
Summer tournaments. So as you can see it is aimed at an younger
audience.
8. Apple
• The apple website is a website that promotes their products such
as IPad, IPhone, macs etc. They have huge amounts of
information about each one of their products which you can
choose to read from the top as there are options of what to read
about. As you can see in the picture on the next page there are
many options from Mac, IPad, IPhone, Watch, TV as they have
videos also explaining about their products. They have also have a
music option as the have a whole other website where you can
buy music called ITunes and lastly they have a support option
where you can seek help if you need help on your apple device.

10. Apple
• The text on the Apple website is always hugely biased and always
promoting their own product, they will never talk about other
companies such as Samsung, Sony etc. And that is because their only
goal is wanting to sell and advertise their products. So they go over
the top with talking about how good their product is and say how it
is better than other products here is an example. The key sentence is
“It puts incredible power that leaps past most portable PCs at your
fingertips. As you can see they say that their product is much better
than any others so they are very biased
11. • In addition to this the text is also sometimes humorous to engage the
audience to read it and not feel bored, and instead feel more
entertained. An example of this is shown here. This is supposed to be
funny and it is similar to a pun.
