Cluster 3 update 2nd February 2015
 No meetings of the Cluster have taken place since its last report
・ For now the Cluster has served its purpose with input to the Expert Panel work
 The DCMS Expert Panel is making progress
・ A draft report should be ready for submission to Government before the end of
May 2015
・ Should have the opportunity for a more substantive meeting of Cluster 3 acting
as a sounding board from mid-March when there will be some output from the
Expert Panel for testing
 The Expert Panel plans to hold a workshop in early March
・ Numbers are limited but some members of the Forum will be invited to take
part – more on this soon.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with.
