4. Karuselli —— 1958 Olli Borg

·
The idea for the Karuselli chair came in design school Helsinki in
Professor Olli Borg’s lecture of physiology (later ergonomics) 1958.
After that lecture Yrjö Kukkapuro deciced to design a some kind
of full body chair one day.
5. The Karuselli chair came out as trumps at exhibitions right from
the start. After visiting one of Haimi’s stands, the great Gio
ponti, founder of Domus design magazine, invited Kukkapuro
to take part in his next Eurodomus exhibition, which was held
in Genoa in 1966.
”The flagship of the American Line. The sight of the magnifi-
cent vessel riding at anchor in the harbour gave us the idea
of using a picture of it as our background. The chair was
dragged out into the yard and I started photographing it as
quickly as I could. The editor of Domus turned up, There it was
then, a couple of months later in 1966, on the front cover of
Domus.”

piece of interior design. I like to retire to one with a cigar
and a stiff drink as frequently as possible.”

The core of Avarte’s collection are the classics
designed by the company’s principal designer, Yrjö
Kukkapuro in the 1960’s, for example Karuselli,
Remmi, Ateljee and Funktus chairs. One of
Kukkapuro’s favourite sayings, “Does it make any
sense to design a chair which is not good to sit on.”
describes Avarte’s love for ergonomic furniture.
