2. Issues with job matching-Student
perspective
• 365,000 people a year graduate in the UK. With
masters and foundation degrees included, about
half a million people are leaving higher education
each year
• Competition is compounded by employers
redefining the requirements- UCAS entry
requirements, work experience, placements,
extra-curricula activities
• Many recruitment processes are long and
arduous involving the use of assessment centres
and other challenging ways of graduate selection
3. A new formula for employability
success?
• Many students think that Qualifications =
Employability : Q = E
Paul Redmond says that the Graduate Jobs
Formula is:
• Q + WE + S x C = E (Employability)

4. Graduate Jobs Formula
• Qualifications + Work Experience
+ Skills X Contacts =
Employability

5. Employers Perspective
• National competitiveness will conceal
regional/local skill shortages or other
distortions of the labour market
• Students perceptions of employers may be
dominated by market leaders or household
names
• Small and medium sized firms struggle to gain
visibility
6. Could students do better?
• Find out more about employers
• Research job roles more thoroughly
• Attend employer events more at university
• Complete CVs and application forms with
more attention to what is required
• Show more enthusiasm for what is on offer
when attending interviews
7. Accountancy
• E.g. Ernst Young one of the UK’s
‘Big 4’ Accountancy firms
• Luton office-audit public sector
• Audit forms the largest part of
the Assurance practice and is
experiencing significant growth in
a rapidly changing market. This
offers our people great
opportunities for learning and
progression.
• As an audit professional your
main aim will be to provide
independent verification of our
client’s compliance with
accounting principles.
8. Motor Insurance Bureau
• Reduce uninsured driving
• MIB is at the heart of the fight against uninsured driving. This
is a problem that seriously affects the lives of those involved
in road accidents and costs millions of pounds every year
• Working in partnership with insurers, Police and DVLA, the
level of uninsured driving has dropped by some 50% in the
last 10 years. This has economic and social benefits - the
honest motorist carries less of the cost burden through motor
premiums and our roads are safer
• But who has heard of this charitable organisation supported
by other insurers in the industry?
9. SME Sector-visibility?

experience2/studying-at-
bedfordshire/student-services/careers
12. Why mobile is so important?
• Most of our students are ‘digital natives’
• Many students/graduates are geographically
mobile-addresses and country of residence
will change-mobile number remains a
constant
• Many students live on a relatively low income-
mobile technology is affordable
• Mobile phone use is the ‘gateway’ to the
‘Internet of things’.
13. Why Talented Europe?
• Many of the most talented students from UoB in the
last ten years are of European heritage. In many cases
we need to ‘sell’ them back to employers on the
European mainland
• There are 159 Universities in the UK; credentials count.
Getting the support of an academic tutor in such a
direct way would help
• Tutors can endorse the talents of student - this is an
important part of the 'sell' for Talented Europe. Once
an employer finds one good candidate from the app,
they will go back for more from ‘credible’ tutors
• Success breeds success!
Aimed at undergraduates but can this be applied to Doctoral students. What additional opportunities are there to develop Work Experience & Skills.
