  1. Mijn naam is Saskia Nijs en ik voel mij de medewerker van de 21e eeuw. Ik doe veel verschillende dingen, maar alles draait om waar ik goed in ben: mensen helpen om samen te werken en buiten de gebaande paden te denken. Ik doe dat als head of stratgy bij Philips. Maar ook probeer ik mensen anders te laten denken en kijken via mijn columns in het FD en ik ben met mijzelf de uitdaging aangegaan om wetenschappelijk te onderbouwen hoe bedrijven van de toekomst zich het beste kunnen organiseren. De combinatie organisatie-mens-technologie zijn voor mij vervolgens een belangrijk onderdeel geworden van mijn carriere. Bij Microsoft heb ik aan de wieg mogen staan van Het Nieuwe Werken. Heel leerzaam om van binnenuit een verandering te mogen begeleiden en tegelijkertijd ook zelf een enorme verandering door te maken. Drie belangrijke dingen die ik heb geleerd van dit traject zijn: Focus op de mensen in je organisatie die wel in beweging willen gaan. Er is een algemene regel dat 20% van de mensen graag willen veranderen om te veranderen zonder dat direct helder is waar de verandering toe leidt. 60% kijkt de kat uit de boom en 20% wil niet. Focus niet op het meekrijgen van de mensen die niet willen maar geef de 20% veranderaars de ruimte om dit te realiseren. Toon ook de minder goede kanten. Niet alles hoeft rozengeur en maneschijn te zijn. Laat ook medewekers of directielieden die minder positief staan ten opzichte van de verandering aan het woord zodat medewerkers zich daarin mogen herkenne. Vrijheid betekent verantwoordelijkheid. Vaak wordt deze verandering gezien als ‘we geven de mensen allemaal vrijheid en ik weet niet of ze dat aankunnen’. In veel begeleidingen van directieteams geeft vrijwel iedereen aan zelf heel goed om te kunen gaan met verandering maar dat ze denken dat hun medecollega’s dat niet kunnen. Ik confronteer iedereen altijd met dit beeld want als iedereen van zichzelf wel vindt dat hij het kan???? Maar wat wel vaak wordt vergeten is dat er met die vrijheid veel verantwoordlijkheid komt. En die maken we toch vaak niet genoeg expliciet. Mijn rol als manager is veel zwaarder geworden in het nieuwe werken. Want nog steeds willen medewerkers (samen) bepalen wanneer ze succsvol zijn en wat er van ze wordt verwacht. Dat kost tijd een aandacht en veel managers stappen daar echt te luchtig overheen. ‘Ach we doen 1x per jaar een soort review en roepen dan wat algemeenheden en dan komen we er wel mee weg’. Hoe demotiverend voor de medewerkers die graag adequate feedbak ontvangen. Want ieder mens wil zijn of haar werk goed doet. Daar kunnen jullie vanuit gaan. In welke omgeving, welke branche en welke rol dan ook. Maar wat ik vooral ook heb gezien en ervaren hoe onze bedrijfssystemen en meetmethoden verandering tegenhouden. Onze organisaties zijn ingericht in de 20e eeuw met oude uitgangspunten. Scorecards zorgen ervoor dat we creativiteit laten varen. Onze HR regels en structuren zorgen ervoor dat we nog steeds op de aloude manier moeten groeien naar andere rollen. En dat terwijl een lifetime employment of groei van medewerker naar CEO niet meer van onze tijd is. En omdat ik die druk voel en zie, heb ik besloten om dat academisch te gaan onderzoeken. Graag zou ik willen leren wat we als organisties minimaal moeten inrichten en faciliteren om medewerkers maximaal te laten presteren en ontwikkelen. En mijn stelling is dat het anders kan en moet en dat we dan kunnen realiseren door jong & oud, groot en klein, nieuw en established met elkaar kunnen en moeten verenigen.
