Critical to Maine’s Economy
In 1910, Maine was at the peak of an immigration wave
providing crucial labor for its biggest industries. The US
Census of that year found that 16% of Maine’s population
were immigrants.
Output in the paper and wood pulp; lumber and timber;
textiles; and footwear industries heavily reliant on
immigrant work

Over the long term, immigrants raise wages and
increase employment for native workers.
From 1990-2006, immigration caused a 2.86% real
wage increase for the average worker and an increase
of 11% employment.
This is especially true for the STEM fields.

15. Immigrants Entrepreneurship In the US
From 2006 - 2012, 24.3% of engineering and technology
companies had at least one immigrant founder.
Immigrants are 2x as likely to start a business as native born.
Immigrant-owned businesses are 60% more likely to export than
are non-immigrant-owned businesses.
A 2012 study by the Partnership for a New American Economy
found that immigrant-owned businesses employ one out of
every 10 private-sector workers in the country.
