2. About Me:
Hi, my name is Sylvester Fihla, I am a designer residing in
Cape Town and I have a passion for digital design using
photoshop & indesign. I have a diploma from Cape Penin-
sula University of Technology and I absolutely love to create
beautiful compositions that keep the viewer captivated at it
goes straight to the heart.
Besides design, I am a peace loving vegan with a strong
love for animals and the value of nature as I see the planet
as a very beautiful place and should not be harmed but
appreciated. I love all life on the planet as it is an indescrib-
able or rather ineffable beauty of a creation.
My lifestyle is loosely based on art & design and since I love
creativity, it has become a huge part of my life and has inev-
itably become one of my aspirations to become a graphic
designer as I am creative, innovative and enthusiastic about
art & design.
I love to portray work inspired by the beauty of nature and
the love of animals and all things beautiful in creation. I find
it so amazing to use different styles in design to visually con-
vey a message to the viewer and have them with the feeling
of bewilderment/ astonishment to the point that they find a
turning point in their lifestyles.
My work also challenges social issues that affect each and
every South African whether its health related or about the
environmental surroundings, all these issues form part in the
psyche of every South African.
I decide to do campaigns based on the factors that affect
us all, things like trauma awareness, HIV & AIDs epidemic in
South Africa and the high rate in which poaching is arising
in this country. I hope to achieve the goal of having people
be cautious about these issues and maybe a certain few
out of those individuals will help aid in trying to solve some
of the problems caused by these dreadful occurrences.

Lately I absolutely love to portray nature
driven illustrative work of animals which
depicts the emotions of these creatures
and embodies the value of what we have
on the planet.
I wish to achieve a mind altering percep-
tion of animals to individuals who do not
acknowledge the worth of life on this plan-
et which includes all animals.

Mandela Month
Mandela month is in July and commemorates
the anniversary of Mandela’s Passing and it has
become an annual international day in honour
of Nelson Mandela, celebrated each year on the
date of his birthday, July 18.
On Mandela Day, people from all over the World
are called to devote at least an hour of their time
to change the World for the better, in a small
gesture of solidarity with humanity, and in a small
step towards a continuos, global movement for
good.
2014 is particularly symbolic, as the world contin-
ues to honour the great South African statesman
by making every day a Mandela Day.
In the year 2014 South Africa Makes its 20 years of
democratic freedom.
In 2013 and 2014 I decided I am going to design
a poster or any elements of design as a token of
my appreciation even if it is something small to
change the World and shape peoples minds.

plicable for Ipad and Iphone devices.

are easy to use and comes in handy

have the convenience to always make
a trip to the store to purchace maga-
zines.The Interactive digital magazine

Surface Design
Experience
Surface Design Experience
Having visited a surface designer’s
company in Woodstock in which is
called ‘Robin Spong Surface Design’
I was so fascinated in their patterns
or rather textures and layering so
much beautiful and interesting col-
ours onto a surface to make it look
so much of
a visual delight.
In my experince and after seeing so
much beautiful work coming from
surface designers, I decided to try
out something exciting by coming up
with a concept of having a couple
who are “unaware” of their surround-
ings and only to find the whole en-
tire room hit or rather an explosion
of somewhat an overwhelmingly
amazing splatter of patterns which
covered the entire atmosphere
and also happened to land on the
clothes and everything in sight.
For me, surface design is taking the
ordinary and turning it into some-
thing very valuable as it now has
new and interesting features in
which I fing to be incredibly For me,
surface design is taking the ordinary
and turning it into something very
valuable as it now has new and
interesting features in which I find to
be incredibly phenominal.
Looking at the elements and prin-
ciples of design which is to make
anything, whether it is a painting,
a chair, or a house, suitable materi-
als must be chosen. These might be
wood, stone, metal, glass, or paint.
The materials must then be organ-
ized within an area or volume. To do
this we use the elements of design.
These are line, color, value, space,
mass, and texture. The arrangement
of these elements is determined by
the principles of design--proportion,
rhythm, and balance.

The community intervention (cic)
is an NGO based in Milnerton
as it office is situated inside the
Milnerton police station but it
however helps the surrounding
ares like Table View, Milnerton
and Melkbos. It helps aid in
rehabilitating individuals who
have experienced or undergone
traumatic experiences and seek
the necessary help to cope with
problems they are faced with as
it becomes a part of the psyche.
The NGO gets its staff from the
members of the public living in
and around the neighbourhood,
these are people who are so
free willingly generous to take
the time out to volunteer for a
cause that helps the community.
I sought to do a campaign
about trauma in the neighbour-
hood and so I decided to do de-
signs to be placed at the My City
Bus (Bus Stops) posters for the
NGO to help in conving some of
the introverted people who bot-
tle up their frustrations in which
only makes matters worse due to
a lack of comfort or somebody
to open up to, through design-
ing these bus stop posters I am
targeting members of the public
to seek the necessary help and
inevitably go on with their daily
lives to a much healthy, hap-
pier and prosperous life and
are able to do the things that
they love and enjoy to their full
potential.
The style used in the illustrations
are geometric shapes which
is a concept that each peice
of the shape embodies each
member of the public and peice
by peace we can help solve the
problems if we come together
as one. we can conquer all the
troublesome obstacles in life we
find so difficult to overcome.

BIG Business Man vs Small Man
Big msn vs small man is a concept driven by slavery as it is a poster
about slavery and the impact it can cause to the ones it affects the
most. The concept behind this poster is that the ‘Big ma’ is the big
business man who is on top as he is very powerful such as that South
Africa in itself has become seemingly very aristocratic as the people
who are on top want to stay on top and only care about themselves.
The small man is the poverty stricken man who has to work very hard
for very little as the saying goes “the rich become richer and the poor
become poorer” and we South Africans see it everyday as it has
become a crisis in the over population of the country and the lack of
employment opportunities.
The small man concept illustrated in the poster shows that if the small
man all com together as one are still smaller that the big business
man, however form or shape a much lager man and is the embodi-
ment of unity.

For my info graphic poster I have decided to do
an HIV/ AIDS epidemic poster primarily focused on
South African statistics and how rapidly or rather
shockingly the number of infections increases as
the virus in the country is at an all time high, com-
pared o the rest of the World.
Secondary, the South African statistics are com-
pared to a global scale so as to show how much
percentage South Africa takes up, as it is the high-
est in the World rankings for the total amount of
infections.
The mere fact that we are number one in the World
has inevitably become my concept, as it is shock-
ing. I decided to do a design of a trophy so as to
imply that we have won and no one else can beat
us at the moment, this plays on the irony of hav-
ing to be infamous or having to be number one for
something so terrible.
The title is a satire as the AIDS epidemic is a very
serious issue in South Africa and it has become the
number one virus in our country and what I am try-
ing to do is to put across the seriousness as the se-
verity of the spread of the AIDS virus in South Africa
is of utmost awareness.
