• Data journalism is "a way of enhancing reporting and news writing with
the use and examination of statistics in order to provide a deeper insight
into a news story and to highlight relevant data.
• It reflects the increased interaction between content producers and
several other fields such as design, computer science and statistics.
• From the point of view of journalists, it represents "an overlapping set of
competencies drawn from disparate fields".
DATA JOURNALISM

DATA JOURNALISM DIFFERENT TO THE REST
OF JOURNALISM?
 Perhaps it is the new possibilities that open up when you combine
the traditional ‘nose for news’ and ability to tell a compelling story,
with the sheer scale and range of digital information now available.
 Data journalism can help a journalist tell a complex story through
engaging info-graphics.
 Getting started with data journalism does not require huge
resources.

PROCESS IN DATA
JOURNALISM
• Finding data expert knowledge
Ability to use computer assisted reporting skills, technical in data
gathering.
• Interrogating data
A good understanding of jargon and the wider context within
which data sits, statistics.
• Cleaning Data
Raw data can be difficult to make meaning of, therefore you need
to process data set into a format which is easily analyzed.

PROCESS IN DATA
JOURNALISM
• Getting The Story Out of Data
The most useful output of analysis is getting a story out of the
data through statistical or mathematical processing.
• Visualizing data
At this stage, data is converted into information through the use
of graphics, pictures, diagrams and charts.
Publish, Distribute, Measure.

BENEFITS
It helps you find and write
stories from the huge amount of
data released by governments
every day.
It helps you find the strongest
stories more quickly.
It can help explain why and how
a story relates to the individual.
BENEFITS
 Data journalism helps open up
the news gathering process
itself.
 Data journalism can help a
journalist tell a complex story
through engaging visualizations.
BENEFITS OF USING DATA
JOURNALISM

form of journalism in which
reporters deeply investigate a
single topic of interest, such
as serious crimes, political

News Reporting ( Ali Haider )
• It’s about digging
deeply into an issue or
topic.
• The issue or topic has
to be of public
interest.
• It’s original and
proactive.
• It should produce new
information or put
together previously
available.
INVESTIGATIVE
REPORTING HAS THE
FOLLOWING
ELEMENTS
Page no : 14
News Reporting ( Ali Haider )
• Information in a new way
to reveal its significance.
• It should be multi-
sourced.
• Because of its in-depth
nature, it calls for greater
resources and team
working.

STORY IDEAS FOR
INVESTIGATIVE REPORTING
• Your own experience and that of friends and neighbors.
• Follow-ups on previous stories.
• Reading and the Internet.
• Street, cafes and taxi gossip.
• Routine checks of public information and with contacts.
Page no : 18
News Reporting ( Ali Haider )
WRITING THE
INVESTIGATIVE STORY
• This requires choices about: form, content, and style.
• The 7 stages of writing: choosing the subject, planning, news
gathering, pre- writing, writing, re-writing and feedback.
• Good writing: accuracy, clarity, conciseness, coherence,
conventionality and originality while writing the investigative story.
• Make sure the story is complete.

WITHHOLDING
INFORMATION

News Reporting ( Ali Haider )
EXAMPLE
• Interview of Former President Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari taken off air
July 2, 2019
• It was conducted by senior journalist Hamid Mir
• It was taken off air within a few minutes of broadcasting on Geo News,
leaving many question to the freedom of the press in Pakistan. E.g.
