2. The Definite Article
Артикль — це спеціальне службове слово, яке
ставиться перед іменником і визначає його.
Означений артикль the походить від вказівного
займенника that, звідси і його значення. The
вживається з іменниками, як злічуваними, так і
незлічуваними, в однині та множині.
4. Коли предмет або особа вже згадувалися
або є відомими з контексту:
I know a doctor. – The doctor is nice.
I know a teacher. – The teacher is wise.
I know a girl. – The girl is pretty.
I know a boy. – The boy is witty.
I bought a carrot for my parrot,
The parrot didn’t like the carrot.
I bought a pear for my hare,
The hare didn’t like the pear.
I bought a house for my mouse,
The mouse didn’t like the house.
I bought a mat for my cat,
The cat didn’t like the mat.
5. Якщо тим, хто говорить і слухає, зрозуміло,

Традиційно артикль не вживається зі словом Parliament (в Англії);
NATO; може бути пропущеним перед словом (The) Congress (в США).

водоспадів: Niagara Falls, континентів: Europe,
країн*: Ukraine, провінцій, штатів: California, міст
та сел: London, іменами, прізвищами людей,
кличками тварин: Tom, Lucky.
Означений артикль вживається:
• з офіційними назвами країн, що включають слова republic, union, kingdom,
states, emirates, а також the Argentine, the Congo , the Caucasus, the Crimea,
the Hague, etc
•з назвами континентів, країн, міст, якщо їх індивидуалізує означення: the
Europe of the Middle Ages
