2. • The UN COP 21 Paris Agreement on climate change has united the
world around an ambitious climate goal
– To hold the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C
above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature
increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels
• To achieve this ambitious climate goal
– We must pick up the pace on climate mitigation action by deploying all
solutions: energy efficiency, low carbon energy sources, and electrification of
parts of economy
– We also have to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and developing solutions to
remove excess CO2 that has accumulated in the atmosphere
Overview
8. Mission and Objective
• Mission
– Help the Bay Area get to climate neutrality—and beyond—by fostering the
development of local carbon removal projects
• Objective
– Engage Bay Area stakeholders in developing and deploying carbon removal
climate solutions
– Carbon removal solutions
• Landscape restoration, carbon-sequestering agriculture, and negative-emissions energy
technologies
• Can work alongside traditional emissions abatement strategies (such as renewable
energy and ecosystem conservation) to strengthen mitigation action, yet are
underdeveloped today
– Bay Area has a unique combination of academics, startups, NGOs,
philanthropies, and large companies passionate about curtailing climate change
– Bring together the combination and provide the space for collaborative
innovation.
9. Project Goal Description
• Project Goal:
– Convene stakeholders to discuss carbon removal project options.
– Outline concrete ideas for projects.
– Move projects forward
• Project Description
– SSV will partner with Center for Carbon Removal (CCR) of UC Berkeley to host a
design workshop to bring together key stakeholders to scope for carbon removal
projects
• Panelists to present information about the need for carbon removal solutions, and
opportunities and challenges from different approaches
• Startups to present ideas and technologies for local pilot projects
• Set up groups to design pilot projects and how to implement them
– SSV and CCR will review projects and plan for fund raising to support the scale
up of viable projects
10. Project Approach
• Phase I
– Design and host a workshop to bring together key stakeholders from NGOs,
startups, academic groups, corporations, government agencies and philanthropic
organizations
– Time line: Q1 to Q2 of 2016
– SSV’s responsibilities
• Coordinate with CCR to identify key stakeholders and participants for Workshop
• Workshop logistics and marketing
• Phase II
– Evaluate projects
– Raising funds and/or grants to initiate projects
– Time line: Q3 – Q4 of 2016
– SSV’s responsibilities
• Coordinate with CCR to evaluate projects
• Coordinate with CCR for funds and/or grants raising events
• Project management
11. Project Opportunities
• Marin Carbon Project (Marin)
– using municipal compost on rangelands to supply carbon-negative meats -- could be very
interesting for a company that has a cafeteria that composts their waste and seeks to sourc
local, carbon-negative food.
• Global Thermostat (Pilot Project at SRI in Menlo Park)
– have a machine that pulls CO2 out of ambient air. Could be interesting for a company that h
data center that produces inexpensive heat that can be used to power the system in a way t
makes the data center net-negative in its carbon profile.
• All Power Labs (Berkeley)
– creates energy using a modular biomass generator -- the resulting biochar can be applied to
carbon-depleted soils to generate carbon-negative energy.
• Blue Planet (Los Gatos)
– working to generate carbon-sequestering cements -- could be interesting for a company bui
new HQ.
• Carbon Cycle Institute (Petaluma)
– achieving carbon sequestration in rangeland and argicultural soil through carbon farming
techniques
