Solar radiation play important role in fruiting and flowering which ultimately increase yield. Thus for better intersection of light in fruit plant canopy management is important.
3. Introduction To Jackfruit
Jack, Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam., bearing the largest edible fruit in the
world, is a tropical evergreen tree belonging to the family Moraceae.
It is an indigenous fruit crop of Southern Asia. It is a staple food of Kerala
Tribals & also in African countries like Uganda.
Owing to its numerous culinary uses and it availability in plenty during the
heavy monsoon rains, jackfruit has earned the well deserved name “Poor
man’s food”.
Jack bulb are rich source of Carbohydrates.
4. Main Reason behind getting lower yield
in
Jackfruit cultivation
Due to lack of proper handling and cultural management practices we
get lower yield.
The tree architecture affect directly to flowering and fruiting.
Interseption of solar radiationin fruit tree is also important in flowering
and fruiting.
Therefore, canopy management is very much needed to get that
expected standard yield.
5. What is Canopy Management
Canopy management is the manipulation of tree canopies to optimize
the production of quality fruits.
The canopy management, particularly its components like tree training
and pruning, affects the quantity of sunlight intercepted by trees, as
tree shape determines the presentation of leaf area to incoming
radiation.
An ideal training strategy centers around the arrangement of plant
parts, especially, to develop a better plant architecture that optimizes
the utilization of sunlight and promotes productivity.
6. Types of training systems

8. TRAINING AND PRUNING IN
JACKFRUIT
Training in jackfruit in early stage to build strong framework and to avoid
weak crotches is necessary.
Plants of jackfruit should be trained on single stem. Apical growth needs to be
controlled within first year of planting for better canopy architecture.
9. Important points to be considered before
going to the canopy management
With respect to the different phenological changes likeTree age, Tree Height,
Vigour, Canopy Size, Flushing, period of active growth, flowering and
harvesting should be taken in account before going to Canopy Management.
10. .
Pruning the trees soon after they are planted restores the balance between
the root system and the above ground part.
Young trees are usually pruned in order to obtain a frame work that is
strong and accessible for other cultural practices.
11. .
Fully grown fruit trees are pruned to maintain the canopy height, spread
and density required for easy spraying fruit thinning, harvesting, etc. the
main reason for pruning of mature tree is to foster a high quality of
economic parts.
Pruning prevents excessive fruiting increases fruit size and facilitates live
penetration into interior part of the tree canopy which improves fruit
colouration.
12. .
Pruining influences photosynthesis indirectly by improving the interception
of light and its distribution within the bearing area of canopy.
Pruning trials are seldom undertaken in Jack.
Judicious pruning in Jack provides the trees a desirable low head.
Effect of pruning on physiochemical characters like Fruit weight and
volume increase.
13. .
Plants are topped (headed back) to a uniform height of 70-80 cm
from the ground level, 3-4 months after planting to induce the
emergence of new growth.
Three to four well spaced limbs are retained around the main stem
to form the scaffold limbs of the plant.
Additional unwanted shoots are removed from time to time to give
the plant desired shape.
