1. Position title and type of work the student has undertaken:
Research Scientist– Wildlife Ecology.Assistingwiththe Departmentof Environment, Land, Waterand
Planning’s Leadbeater’s Possumresearchproject, involvingsurveyingforLeadbeater’s Possums toenable
protection fromtimberharvesting, andadetailed research projecttoassessthe effectiveness of developing
artificial hollows toincrease the numberof nestingsitestoimprove conservation prospects. The specificwork
involved examiningalarge numberof photographs takenof animalsinvestigatingandbuildingnestsinthe
artificial hollows, withSushantexaminingover40,000 photostakingusingremote camerassetup at the hollows.
Each photo wasexamined toidentify the species anddocumentthe behaviourof the animals. The datawas
entered intoExcel andtheninterpreted andsummarisedintoaninformative table format. Alsocontributed to
preparingequipmentforfieldsurveysandparticipated inafieldtriptoverify areported colony of Leadbeater’s
Possumsubmitted byacommunity group. Inthe fieldworkedwithecologists andarborists tosafely and
effectively install remote camerashighintreestodetectthe nocturnal,crypticLeadbeater’s Possum. This
involved workingindense forestedvegetationnearPowelltown, while adheringtosafety protocols andtaking
precautions inorderto avoidanypotential hazards (includinglotsof leeches!). Attended staff meetingsand
workshops onotherprojects beingundertaken atARI whichprovided insightsintothe range of biodiversity
researchundertaken inDELWP.

I was very pleasedwithhow Sushantperformed inthisworkplacement–he isa very bright, motivated student
whowas very thorough anddiligentinperformingthe workrequired andhada keeninterestinunderstanding
where the work fittedintothe biggerpicture. Althoughnotexperienced inthisareawhenhe started, he learnt
quickly andwasable to manage hisowntime and tasksand stay motivatedduringperiodswhen therewas
limitedsupervision.

The specificwork involved examiningalarge numberof photographs takenof animalsinvestigatingandbuildingnestsinthe artificial hollows, withSushantexaminingover40,000 photostakingusingremote camerassetup at the hollows. Each photo wasexamined toidentify the species anddocumentthe behaviourof the animals. The datawas entered intoExcel andtheninterpreted andsummarisedintoaninformative table format. Alsocontributed to preparingequipmentforfieldsurveysandparticipated inafieldtriptoverify areported colony of Leadbeater’s Possumsubmitted byacommunity group. Inthe fieldworkedwithecologists andarborists tosafely and effectively install remote camerashighintreestodetectthe nocturnal,crypticLeadbeater’s Possum. This involved workingindense forestedvegetationnearPowelltown, while adheringtosafety protocols andtaking precautions inorderto avoidanypotential hazards (includinglotsof leeches!). Attended staff meetingsand workshops onotherprojects beingundertaken atARI whichprovided insightsintothe range of biodiversity researchundertaken inDELWP. 2.
