1. Sue is one of the nation’s leading health care philanthropy professionals. Sue has led and
directed philanthropic programs that have generated over $250 million. Named the
prestigious Harold J. (Si) Seymour Award Recipient in 2014 by the Association for Healthcare
Philanthropy, Susan was recognized for her professional expertise, commitment to
advancing the philanthropy profession and strategic leadership ability.
She has built a distinguished career in philanthropy over three decades, including shaping
one of Maine’s most comprehensive development programs at Maine Medical Center. She
oversees the entire philanthropic program for MaineHealth’s largest health care provider
Maine Medical Center, including The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical
Center and integrated service lines. Under her leadership, Maine Medical Center has
generated nearly $170 million in philanthropy. Her team is currently directing an endowment
initiative which will raise $40 million for undergraduate medical education scholarships for
students attending the Maine Track Program associated with the Tufts University School of
Medicine and setting the stage for a comprehensive facilities campaign in the near future.
Sue is a 1981 graduate of Bates College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and
subsequent Masters in Business coursework at the Crummer School of Finance and Business.
Prior to Maine Medical Center she served as Director of Development at Wheaton College in
Norton, MA and Associate Director of Development at Bates College in Lewiston, ME.
She served as the Chair of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy in 2012 following 1o
years of board service (AHP is the leading authority for standards, knowledge and leadership
in health care philanthropy. As the world’s largest association for health care fundraising
professionals, AHP members raise more than $9 billion each year for community health
services). In addition, Sue is a regular contributor to healthcare finance and philanthropy
media inquiries and is a featured presenter at national and international development
assemblies.
Susan has served on the boards of Bates College, the Association for Healthcare
Philanthropy, the Institute for Civic Leadership, Piper Shores Retirement Community, and
also as a Corporator for Gorham Savings Bank. Sue resides in Cape Elizabeth, Maine and has
a family home in West Yarmouth, Massachusetts.
