Week 3 Peer graded Assignment
Topic – A leadership crisis you were involved in.
1. What happened? (Background, brief description of events, specific
leadership actions)
What were the results?
Recently, my team had participated in a national level hackathon where I was the
team leader and we were given a task of developing an app for the police officials.
We were time bound and the application wasn’t even developed completely. The
pressure was continuously increasing and the mentors were also very upset with
the work completed so far.
As a leader it was my job to handle things and divide the tasks equally so that it
could be finished within the stipulated time. So, I took charge and called for a
meeting with the team members. Firstly, we discussed about the tasks assigned and
tasks completed so far. Then we came up with a plan to not push things and deliver
the exact same application which we initially intended to do, rather we tried to
develop a simpler app with only the most needed features at that point.
Although, the app wasn’t completely developed but still the judges were impressed
with the time management and leadership qualities.
2. Why did this happen? (Consider all possible factors, including the
people and the situation)
As the team initially lacked some guidance and influence, this situation arose
where the work wasn’t completed and required some tough decisions. We weren’t
completely doing the work in an organized manner which led to more problems.
3. What class concepts are relevant to this situation? (Mention at least one
concept from class and how they can be used to interpret the situation.)
As a leader, it was my job to make some tough decisions and to make team
members do the needful. I used some powers of my position to divide the project
as per the requirements and assign them. The tasks were then organized based on
required skills and time constraint.
4. What did you learn from this? (Broader lessons that might apply to
other situations or problems.)
Desperate times require desperate measures. This quote goes perfectly in this
situation as the team was falling apart and needed some tough calls. The mentors
had also given up but as a leader it was my job to hold them back and manage to
stay in the competition. I learnt that it requires strong leadership skills in these
types of situations.
