2. INTRODUCTION
ā¢ The services sector is not only the dominant sector in
Indiaās GDP, but has also attracted significant foreign
investment flows, contributed significantly to exports as
well as provided large-scale employment.
ā¢ Indiaās services sector covers a wide variety of activities
such as trade, hotel and restaurants, transport, storage and
communication, financing, insurance, real estate, business
services, community, social and personal services, and
services associated with construction.
ā¢ India ranks fifteenth in the services output and it provides
employment to around 23% of the total workforce in the
country.
3. Market Size
The sector has contributed 54.17 per cent of Indiaās Gross Value Added
at current price in 2018-19*. Net service exports stood at US$ 60.25
billion in April-December 2018 (P).
Investments
Some of the developments and major investments by companies in the
service sector in the recent past are as follows:
Business travel and tourism spending are expected to increase to US$
234.4 billion and US$ 12.9 billion in 2018, respectively.
Indiaās earnings from medical tourism could exceed US$ 9 billion by
2020.
Indian healthcare companies are entering into merger and acquisitions
with domestic and foreign companies to drive growth and gain new
markets.

With a 56 per cent share, the service sector constitutes
most of J&Kās economy.
Other two major sectors constituting the state economy
are industry at 27.8 per cent and agriculture at 16 per
cent.
The tourism sector plays an important role in the stateās
economy.
Tourism also caters to the allied sectors like handicrafts,
handlooms, and transport. Despite the stateās unique and
rich culture and heritage assets, the tourism sector
accounts for only around 6.98% of the stateās GDP.

2014-18, compared to 2010-14.
ā¢ Six-fold increase in Government spending on
telecommunications infrastructure and services in the
country ā from Rs 9,900 crores during 2009-14 to Rs
60,000 crores (actual + planned) during 2014-19.
ā¢ A total of 11 projects worth Rs 824.80 crore were
