2. Microemulsion
Microemulsions are mono-dispersed spherical
droplets (diameter 20-200 nm) of water in oil or
oil in water, with presence of surfactants and co-
surfactants which helps in reducing the interfacial
tension and hence, stabilizes the system.

3. Composition of microemulsion
Microemulsion is defined as
transparent dispersion consisting of
(1) Oil.
(2) Surfactant.
(3) Cosurfactant.
(4) water.
.

4. Advantages
Thermodynamically stable systems with very small
particle size
Ultimately increase the surface area of drugs which
improves their solubilization and permeation behavior
Plasma concentration profiles and drug availability
have been more reproducible
Drug penetration rate is much faster
Higher solubilization capacity
Can be manufactured with very little energy input and
have a long shelf life
Translucent to transparent appearance

5.  Formation of microemulsions generally
requires large amounts of surfactants and
co-surfactants. All of these at high
concentration are irritating, if not slightly
toxic to the biological systems.
 Factors such as temperature, pH influences
the stability of microemulsions

7. formulation of Cyclosporin A microemulsion has
increased the bioavailability of the drug.
Self emulsifying formulations of fenofibrate or
fenofibrate derivatives having an improved oral
bioavailability.
The self-emulsifying compositions for the improved
solubility and bioavailability of CETP Inhibitor.
Methasone and pilocarpine microemulsions show better
tolerability and higher bioavailability.
Microemulsion gel-based system of babchi oil (Psoralea
corylifolia) provide improved permeation of the drug
through the skin and increased patient compliance.
Mylotarg for injection (microemulsion of IgG monoclonal
antibodies) given by iv route is another recent
advancement.
