Problematic Substance Use in Pregnancy (PSUP): Optimizing the Epigenetics; A ...
Associate Update Holmes Regional Medical Center Sep-Oct 201_1
1. September-October 2016
A very grateful family wrote a letter to
D6. The family expressed their
gratitude for the guest tray service as
it enabled them to spend more time
with their admitted family member
and not have to travel to the
cafeteria. They especially wished to
thank Nutrition Services Technician,
Marie Berry for her, “outstanding
level of care and service.” In their
letter, the family talked about Marie
always greeting them, “with a smile,
even though our orders added to her
workload.” The letter also mentioned
that their orders, “were always 100%
correct” and how Marie, “always
offered assistance.”
Thank you, Marie, for truly
connecting with our patients and
families with your Warm Welcome,
Fulfilling Needs and Caring Farewell.
The team on A5 would like to recognize
Josefina Salguero, a member of the
Housekeeping Team for providing
patients with excellent customer service.
Josefina consistently goes above and
beyond to ensure that patients are well
cared for and remain safe during their
stay. She will always ask a patient if
they have any needs. If there is
something she cannot provide, she will
be sure to find the appropriate person to
attend to the patient.
While rounding on patients they
overwhelmingly acknowledge Josefina
with comments such as, “She’s very
pleasant, helpful and thoughtful.” and,
“She was very attentive and caring,
always making sure I had everything I
needed to be comfortable.”
Josefina is an integral part of our team
and we feel very fortunate to have
someone so caring working with us.
Health First Connections
Caught!
Associates “caught” doing something good.
Marie Berry

making the
Health First
Connection.
Allan Gair has been serving the
Holmes Regional Medical Center
Auxiliary for 10 years. His dedication to
the patients of the Emergency
Department, where he regularly
volunteers, can be seen through his
compassionate demeanor and
willingness to go the extra mile.
Allan recently made a gift to the Health
First Foundation that funded the
purchase of an Accuvein Vein
Illuminator and powered stand. This
technology has been shown to decrease
pain reports by 39% and improve hitting
a vein on the first attempt by 350%,
improving quality of care.
“Mr. Gair’s gift of time and treasure are
perfect examples of what makes our
Health First community so special; and
how gifts to the Foundation can have a
real and immediate impact on the
patients and families we serve,”
Foundation Director, Jeanene Donilon
stated. “We are pleased to recognize his
generosity through a new Foundation
program called ‘Volunteers Forever’
which honors Health First volunteers
who make a planned gift or legacy
commitment to the Foundation.”

2. Investing in Our Mission
Diagnostic Radiology and the
Emergency Department are
working together to decrease wait
times for Emergency Room
patients.
Congratulations to the "Wait
Busters" in the Diagnostic
Radiology and Emergency
Departments. Here's how they are
helping to reduce wait time at
Holmes Regional Medical Center:
Monthly average of X-rays
performed in the Emergency
Department are 4,102 exams
Decreased the average time
from exam order to exam start
from 22 minutes in 2015, to 20
minutes in 2016
Acquired new portable digital
equipment which provides
images immediately
Collaborative partnership
between Diagnostic Radiology
and Emergency Department
associates to streamline
patient flow
On May 18, an expectant mother of
twins came to Labor and Delivery
experiencing contractions and the
possibility of her water breaking.
Shortly after being admitted, one of
her two babies was born. Before the
second baby was delivered, it was
determined by Dr. Wagaman and
Dr. Zoffer that a cesarean section
would be needed. After the second
baby was born, Anesthesiologist, Dr.
Nova quickly noticed the patient’s
condition was deteriorating and
immediately called for additional
support. “Code Blue” was called
overhead, and fellow staff members
jumped in and immediately assumed
their roles. The patient responded
well to all efforts and was transferred
to the Surgical Intensive Care Unit
(SICU) for stabilization.
Diagnostic tests showed the patient
suffered from an Amniotic Fluid
Embolism, which is an unpreventable
allergic-like reaction that occurs
Customer Experience
Marilyn Olavarria, RN, PACU, was
caring for a post op patient and
overheard an anesthesia provider
inform the patient that a mass was
seen on his vocal cord during
intubation. The anesthesia provider
recommended the patient follow-up
with his primary care physician.
The patient appeared to understand
and went home, but after a day or so
Marilyn couldn’t shake the feeling
that maybe the patient did not really
grasp the information and she feared
the patient would not seek treatment.
Marilyn reached out to Holmes
Regional Medical Center’s
anesthesia colleagues and the
Charge Anesthesiologist offered to
call the patient with specific details
about the mass and the
recommended follow-up from his
physician. As a result, the patient
underwent a biopsy last week that
they may otherwise have ignored.
Thank you to Marilyn for being a
patient advocate!
when amniotic fluid enters the
mother’s blood stream. This
complication of pregnancy is
often fatal.
This frightening situation was
executed very calmly and
precisely per protocol, thanks to
excellent Labor and Delivery
staff, including: Jessica
Mulligan, RN, Majel Ohara, RN,
Sherrill Bonnick-Walker, RN,
Shannon Bray, RN and Stacy
Ann Allen, CST. They showed
great team effort and clinical
expertise at its finest! Thanks to
them, the mother was quickly
reunited with her newborn baby
girls.

3. LEAN
A lean event was recently undertaken
on Holmes Regional Medical Center’s
7 East to identify wasteful and
inefficient activities, reduce the amount
of supplies kept on the floor and
increase nurse and patient
satisfaction. A recent addition to the
Holmes Regional team, Sumit Kapur,
was part of this event. Sumit is a
dental surgeon in his home country of
India and currently working on his
Master’s Degree in Healthcare
Administration at University of North
Carolina Charlotte. As part of his
degree requirements, he completed an
administrative internship with our
Holmes Regional CEO, Sean Gregory,
which included this lean event.
Sumit and his 7E team that included
Nurse Manager, John Harrell, Charge
Nurse, Tina Oram and Lean Project
Engineer, Patti Canitano, spent over
six weeks analyzing nurse processes

DAISY Award
Congratulations to DAISY Award
recipient, Lisa Moore.
Holmes Regional Medical Center
recognizes and honors Lisa
Moore, RN from the NICU as an
extraordinary, compassionate
nurse and winner of the DAISY
Award.
Lisa was nominated by the
mother of a NICU patient who felt
her passionate and kind-hearted
ways on more than one occasion.
Three years ago, Lisa cared for
the mother’s first born child in the
NICU and most recently her
newborn son. “Lisa was so
compassionate of my situation
and let me take my son into the
breastfeeding room for some
one-on-one bonding time (even
though I could not breastfeed),”
said the mother. “At three weeks
old, I got to spend eight hours of
quality alone time with my son for
the first time in his life.” Lisa has
touched the hearts of this family
and for that they will always be
grateful.
Community Partnership
and workflow, supply and equipment
usage, identifying possible areas of
opportunity and creating a plan for
improvement. Improvements to the
area have already been implemented
and include such things as a reduction
in the amount of supplies stored in the
area, decentralized and organized
equipment charging rooms and a
space allocated for an EVS cart to
remain on the floor.
Many other improvements are in the
works to enhance nurse and associate
workflow, including centralizing
medications and supplies and
relocating the clean linen storage area.
These improvements will allow for an
additional 3.6 hours per 12 hour shift
for nurses to provide care at the
patients’ bedside – resulting in more
purposeful rounding, increased patient
satisfaction and happier nurses.
The Holmes Regional Medical Center gift shop now carries
gift items made by Brevard Achievement Center's Cogswell
Art Studio and The Easter Seal Vocational Center. Both of
these community partners provide an avenue for community
members with disabilities to use their creative talents. We
are proud to support both of these programs that provide
innovative services to our community
