STIIRKINVESTMENTS
November 4, 2013
Dear Sir/Madam,
As a managing partner of Stark Investments, I have been responsible for hundreds of hiring
decisions, which means I have reviewed innumerable resumes and reference letters from
prospective candidates. Despite the expertise in the genre that this experience has afforded me, I
seldom write such letters. Nonetheless, I want to take a moment of your time to describe my
experience with and impressions of Andrew Stewart, whom I consider to be an exceptional
candidate.
Andrew worked for me as an intern during his college breaks in 2012 and 2013. Our internships
are structured such that Andrew's duties tracked those of a full-time associate. Andrew had
sought out a position at Stark in order to broaden the scope of his experience in the financial
industry, with which he has had a long-standing interest.
Andrew impressed our staff during the interview process with his superior communication skills,
intelligence, and passion for the investment business. Accordingly, he was hired for one of two
positions in our marketing department. In that role, Andrew was responsible for conducting
research on prospective investors, reviewing investor files and communications for compliance
purposes, and helping to collect information from the organization for use in marketing materials
for our funds.
Andrew performed all of his duties well; so well that he was invited to return for three subsequent
periods to work with our team. In addition, Andrew's work so impressed our Legal and
Compliance staff that they hijacked him during those subsequent periods to work in their area.
To say that Andrew performed his duties "well" does not adequately convey why I consider him to
be an exceptional candidate. Stark has a "self-starter"/team culture that eschews micro-
management and extolls teamwork. Andrew immediately demonstrated his ability to quickly
grasp the requirements of each task, the humility and intelligence to ask appropriate questions
and work well within the group, and the capacity to take responsibility for a task and just get it
done.

Beyond his superior performance on the tasks assigned to him, I found Andrew's appetite for
knowledge of the business, both as to the investment process and the ubusiness" side (back office,
legal, finance, marketing, etc.) to be remarkable for someone his age. Andrew frequently would
seek out associates in different areas of the business to discuss their areas of responsibility.
The other aspect of Andrew worth highlighting is his character. The ability to communicate well,
work hard, thrive in a team environment, and take responsibility for tasks, all the while displaying
a high degree of intelligence and passion for the business, obviously are desirable attributes in a
candidate for employment. However, in my experience they count for little without a strong
foundation of character.
I have particularly enjoyed working with Andrew because of the humility and honesty that he
displays. It is too rare in our business to find young people who understand what they don't know,
readily concede it, and have a burning desire to alleviate that condition. Accordingly, I have
encouraged Andrew to seek out other internship opportunities in order to add breadth to his
experience in our business.
In sum, I would recommend Andrew for an internship position without reservation. If you have
any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
ftJ~~IJ,xt
Michael A. Roth
