TB is a disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacterium, which most commonly attacks the lungs but can also infect other parts of the body like the kidney, spine, and brain. Typical symptoms of TB include a persistent cough lasting more than three weeks that may produce phlegm and sometimes blood, along with weight loss, night sweats, fever, fatigue, loss of appetite, and new swellings that don't go away within a few weeks. If left untreated, TB can be fatal.
