CYAN MAGENTA YELLOW BLACK
FROM A RUN2GIVE REPORT
BEAUFORT — With stormy
skies clearing just before the
start of the Run2Give 5K Road
Race, 122 runners took to the
road to enjoy some friendly
competition, as well as help
raise awareness and funds for
Martha’s Mission Cupboard of
Morehead City.
The Run2Give race, held
on the Beaufort waterfront and
directed by 15-year-old Steven
Tulevech Jr. as his Eagle Scout
Service Project for Boy Scout
Troop 130 of Morehead City,
will help the nonprofit emer-
gency food pantry continue its
mission to feed the hungry in
Carteret County.
Last year, Martha’s Mission
fed more than 7,000 families,
according to the Mission’s
Martha Bell, who spoke to race
participants during the awards
presentation.
Tulevech, a sophomore at
West Carteret High School, con-
ceived of the idea to direct a road
race for his project because of
his experiences running in local
races and beach runs. He chose
Martha’s Mission Cupboard as
the race beneficiary after rec-
ognizing the effects of the eco-
nomic recession on his commu-
nity and the support the needy
receive from the food pantry.
A member of West Carteret
High School’s cross country and
track teams, Tulevech has com-
peted in many races, but none
have proven to be as challenging
as the Run2Give.
“It was a lot of work,”
Tulevech said. “I mean a lot
of work. But it was worth it to
see it all come together and be
a success.”
Addressing the crowd,
Tulevech thanked everyone who
ran, volunteered, sponsored the
race and the many people who
helped pull the event together.
“So many people gave me
advice and guided me, lent me
equipment and donated supplies
to make this race a success,” he
said. “I can’t thank everyone
enough for their support.”
Croatan’s Nicholas Pugh, 17,
captured the male overall title
with a time of 18:25, followed
by the women’s overall winner,
Katherine Stephenson, 32, who
finished in 19:13.
Second place overall in the
men’s division went to Tyler
Pake, 29, with a time of 19:14,
and third place to West Carteret’s
Casey Giblin, 17, in 19:27.
Rounding out the women’s
overall division were two West
Carteret runners: Blake Dodge,
16, finished second with a time
of 19:40, and Katie Cease, 17,
captured third in 19:48.
For Tulevech, his only regret
was that he wasn’t able to com-
pete in the race himself.
“It was so great to see all
these people come out and sup-
port Martha’s Mission and the
race, to see everyone having
such a great time,” he said.
“This has been such an amazing
experience. I just wish I could
have run in it too.”
With a large contingent of
runners from both West Carteret
and Croatan High schools, the
13-19 age group was by far the
most hotly contested age divi-
sion in the race.
For more information on he
race, contact Tulevech at 515-
4065 or stulevech@gmail.com.

FROM A WEST CARTERET REPORT
WILSON — West Carteret
High School cross country teams
had little trouble in the season
openers Wednesday at Gillette
Park in Wilson with both win-
ning in convincing fashion in a
four-team meet.
The boys finished with 18
points to sprint past Northern
Nash (54), Wilson Fike (79) and
South Central (97).
Patriot runners took the top
three spots with John Crossley
winning the meet in 17:04.
The West senior showed an
offseason of conditioning truly
paid off with his fast time in
the heat and humidity of the
first race. He ran a 17:43 in
Wilson last year in more favor-
able conditions during a mid-
season race.
Steven Tulevech took second
in 17:58, with Jarrett Swearingen
rounding out the top three in
18:19.
John Michael Harris was the
other West runner to break 19
minutes with a time of 18:26.
“The top four runners looked
great for us, but we were really
excited to see Jon Buckland and
Casey Giblin step it up today,”
West coach Shelton May said.
“Jon is a true competitor and has
worked very hard to become a
better runner this year compared
to his sophomore year, and it
is starting to show. I can’t say
enough about Casey. He had
to deal with knee injuries last
year during cross country before
completely breaking it during
last wrestling season.”
Jon Buckland finished in
19:05, with Casey Giblin fol-
lowing closely in 19:07.
“If they continue to improve
as quickly as they have the last
few weeks, they could be the
runners we have been looking
for to make this one of the best
seasons West has ever had,”
Mayo said.
Other top runners for the West
boys included Charlie Klose in
19:47 and Hunter Newman in
19:49.
The lady Patriots finished
with 19 points to break free of
Wilson Fike (50), South Central
(62) and Northern Nash (108).
West runners again took the
top three spots with Blake Dodge
winning the meet in 20:32. Katie
Cease took second in 20:57, with
Emma Gomez rounding out the
top three in 22:36.
OthertopfinishersfortheWest
girls included Maddie Fisher
(22:44), Gabby Talob (23:04),
Kristen Wagner (23:37), Sierra
Milosh (23:57) and Samantha
Schleiker (24:21).
“The girls looked great for an
early season meet, but a lot of
them were not happy with their
performance,” Mayo said. “Two
girls that performed very well
this early in the season were
Maddie and Sierra. They are
performing better this early in
the schedule than what they per-
formed last year in the middle of
the season.”
FROM A CROATAN REPORT
OCEAN — The Croatan High School
boys and girls cross country teams began the
season Thursday with wins over Havelock
with the lady Cougars running away from
the lady Rams by a score of 22-36 and the
Cougars just escaping with a 26-30 win.
Three Croatan girls finished among the
top four with Savannah Pugh taking sec-
ond in 22 minutes, 51 seconds. Havelock’s
Caitlyn Annaziata captured the meet in
22:03. Croatan’s Mary Stegall took third in
24:01, followed closely by Macy Brinson in
fourth in 24:02.
Lady Cougar Rebekah Best finished sixth
in 24:50 with Hannah Parkhurst rounding
out the top seven in a time of 25:17.
“I have a lot of excitement entering this
season due to the depth of our women’s
team,” first-year coach Matt Grulke said.
“We have girls that can win meets no doubt,
but what can make us a force is we have the
potential to place several runners in the top
10. We need to take this experience and build
on it and guard against complacency.”
Last year’s 2A East Central Conference
Boys Runner of the Year, Nick Pugh, paced
the Cougars’attack in the boys race, winning
the meet in 18:37. Teammates Hamilton
Barnhill and Conner O’Brien followed him
in the top five with Barnhill taking third in
19:58 and O’Brien finishing fifth in 20:43.
Sam O’Conner took eighth in 2:34, fol-
lowed by Jordan Glynn in ninth in 22:53.
“Today’s meet proved the boys can be
strong this season, but it will need to be
a collective effort,” Grulke said. “Nick is
always going to finish well, but he will need
his teammates to place well with him. I’m
confident we have the talent to do just that.
Practices need to start going to the next level
as we enter September.”
Croatan will next hit the trail Tuesday at
Topsail to take on league foes Swansboro,
Northside and the host Pirates.
‘It was so great to see
all these people come
out and support Martha’s
Mission and the race,
to see everyone having
such a great time.
This has been such an
amazing experience. I
just wish I could have
run in it too.’

The boys finished with 18 points to sprint past Northern Nash (54), Wilson Fike (79) and South Central (97). Patriot runners took the top three spots with John Crossley winning the meet in 17:04. The West senior showed an offseason of conditioning truly paid off with his fast time in the heat and humidity of the first race. He ran a 17:43 in Wilson last year in more favor- able conditions during a mid- season race. Steven Tulevech took second in 17:58, with Jarrett Swearingen rounding out the top three in 18:19. John Michael Harris was the other West runner to break 19 minutes with a time of 18:26. “The top four runners looked great for us, but we were really excited to see Jon Buckland and Casey Giblin step it up today,” West coach Shelton May said. “Jon is a true competitor and has worked very hard to become a better runner this year compared to his sophomore year, and it is starting to show. I can’t say enough about Casey. He had to deal with knee injuries last year during cross country before completely breaking it during last wrestling season.” Jon Buckland finished in 19:05, with Casey Giblin fol- lowing closely in 19:07. “If they continue to improve as quickly as they have the last few weeks, they could be the runners we have been looking for to make this one of the best seasons West has ever had,” Mayo said. Other top runners for the West boys included Charlie Klose in 19:47 and Hunter Newman in 19:49. The lady Patriots finished with 19 points to break free of Wilson Fike (50), South Central (62) and Northern Nash (108). West runners again took the top three spots with Blake Dodge winning the meet in 20:32. Katie Cease took second in 20:57, with Emma Gomez rounding out the top three in 22:36. OthertopfinishersfortheWest girls included Maddie Fisher (22:44), Gabby Talob (23:04), Kristen Wagner (23:37), Sierra Milosh (23:57) and Samantha Schleiker (24:21). “The girls looked great for an early season meet, but a lot of them were not happy with their performance,” Mayo said. “Two girls that performed very well this early in the season were Maddie and Sierra. They are performing better this early in the schedule than what they per- formed last year in the middle of the season.” FROM A CROATAN REPORT OCEAN — The Croatan High School boys and girls cross country teams began the season Thursday with wins over Havelock with the lady Cougars running away from the lady Rams by a score of 22-36 and the Cougars just escaping with a 26-30 win. Three Croatan girls finished among the top four with Savannah Pugh taking sec- ond in 22 minutes, 51 seconds. Havelock’s Caitlyn Annaziata captured the meet in 22:03. Croatan’s Mary Stegall took third in 24:01, followed closely by Macy Brinson in fourth in 24:02. Lady Cougar Rebekah Best finished sixth in 24:50 with Hannah Parkhurst rounding out the top seven in a time of 25:17. “I have a lot of excitement entering this season due to the depth of our women’s team,” first-year coach Matt Grulke said. “We have girls that can win meets no doubt, but what can make us a force is we have the potential to place several runners in the top 10. We need to take this experience and build on it and guard against complacency.” Last year’s 2A East Central Conference Boys Runner of the Year, Nick Pugh, paced the Cougars’attack in the boys race, winning the meet in 18:37. Teammates Hamilton Barnhill and Conner O’Brien followed him in the top five with Barnhill taking third in 19:58 and O’Brien finishing fifth in 20:43. Sam O’Conner took eighth in 2:34, fol- lowed by Jordan Glynn in ninth in 22:53. “Today’s meet proved the boys can be strong this season, but it will need to be a collective effort,” Grulke said. “Nick is always going to finish well, but he will need his teammates to place well with him. I’m confident we have the talent to do just that. Practices need to start going to the next level as we enter September.” Croatan will next hit the trail Tuesday at Topsail to take on league foes Swansboro, Northside and the host Pirates. ‘It was so great to see all these people come out and support Martha’s Mission and the race, to see everyone having such a great time. This has been such an amazing experience. I just wish I could have run in it too.’ — Steven Tulevech Jr. Race director Croatan cross country teams begin year by beating Havelock West cross country teams run away with first meet of year
