Kent Kings suffered their first home
defeat of the season in a shortened
National Trophy meeting against Stoke
Potters on Monday night.
Kings were trailing 38-25 after 10 heats
when the meeting was abandoned due to
a waterlogged track.
Skipper Simon Lambert (11) and vice-
captain David Mason (7+1) top scored for
the hosts, while Ben Morley claimed the
maximum six points from two rides.
But the damage was done in the first
three heats as Stoke built up a 10-point
lead, with Kent missing Benji Compton,
who remains sidelined with a broken
hand.
Kent are looking to bounce back when
they host Devon Demons for a place in
the National Knockout Cup quarter-
finals on Monday (6.30pm).
The hold a 13-point lead from the first
leg and are expected to progress even
though they will be missing Lambert and
Morley, who are on Elite League duty
with Birmingham and Lakeside.
Former Great Britain Under-21
Championship runner-up Steven Worrall
and Coventry Storm youngster Oliver
Greenwood replace the pair as guest
riders.
n Kent co-promoter Len Silver is off to
meet the Queen.
Silver, 82, has been invited to a royal
garden party at Buckingham Palace
on Tuesday, June 3 in recognition of
outstanding services to motorsport.
He said: “I am proud and privileged to
have received this invitation. It is the
next best thing to a knighthood or CBE.
“I have a lot more to give the sport,
though. When I get to 100, I expect
another message from the Queen!”
Silver has spent most of his life in
speedway, starting out in the 1950s
and winning the Provincial Riders
Championship in 1962 before an accident
at Hackney ended his racing days.
He turned to management and
promotion, with arguably his finest
achievement leading England to a
first-ever World Team Cup win in 1974
before defending the title the following
year.
He has run tracks all over the country
and was a key figure in the launch of
Kings at Sittingbourne last year.

Sittingbourne’s Nico and Joe Waters
narrowly missed out on winning
the Kent under-15 doubles title at
the Howard Table Tennis Centre in
Gillingham, writes Andrae Akeh.
The unseeded cousins were
underdogsinthecompetition,having
been on a programme at Newhouse
Sports Centre which offers free table
tennis to local children.
That did not stop them from
competing in a county-level
competition and beating nationally-
ranked players to reach the final.
Nico’s father, Matthew,
was stunned at the pair’s
achievements.
He said: “They were both unseeded
so was it was a shock that they made
it as far as they did.
“They played at the local table
tennis club because it’s something in
town that’s free of charge and they
beat some good players to reach the
final.
“It’s good that something offered
locally for free could produce that
because some of these other kids
will have started playing when they
were seven, so by the time they are 12
they’re really good.”
Although this was the pair’s first
county event, Nico had won the Kent
School Games under-19s tournament
with Borden Grammar School earlier
this season.
Both play in the Sittingbourne &
District League and Canterbury
District League.
They plan to return to the event and
compete next year in the under-18
section.
Other Sittingbourne competitors
who took part were Matt Hutson,
of Borden, who reached the
under-18 semi-final and Callam
McDonagh, who reached the under-15
semi-final.
All four boys train at the Newhouse
Sports Centre on Saturday between
10am and noon.

The feature event at Central
Park on Thursday was the
Owners’ Bonus Series final.
Tullna Pixie (7/2) won in a
calculated 29.99sec to earn
the £500 first prize for the Dan
Brabon kennel and owners S and
T Parker.
The rest of the winners were well
spread, with doubles for Frank
Gray, Mick Mavrias and Richard
Brain.
Saturday night saw father and
son Mick and Spencer Mavrias
claim trebles. Mick triumphed
with Rubber Soul (5/2),
Curraleigh Trixie (2/1 fav) and
Tromora Skittles (4/1), while
Spencer’s winners were Great
Gizmo (2/1 fav), Aphrodite Lady
(4/1) and Dilemmas Grace (4/1).
Roy Griffin and Tony Collett had
two wins apiece.
Sunday’s varied card of graded
and open races saw some top-
class trainers and greyhounds
descend upon Central Park – but
local trainer Collett stole the
show with four winners.
Maybe Bob got the ball rolling,
having come from fifth place
to first, to take the A1 grade in
29.50.
This was followed by Leigh Bella
(5/1) in the Maiden Stakes and
Kilcar Lassie (2/1 fav) in 29.26 in
another A1.
The quartet was complete when
Fit To Win (5/4 fav) took the main
event of the evening, the Super
Maiden final, in 30.22.
The 642m track record was
broken when Droopys Posh,
trained by Seamus Cahill, won
the Stayers event by six lengths
in 39.58.
Gemma Coney had an open
race double with Di Jess Div in
the Maiden Stayers and Data
Romeo in the first heat of the
Sittingbourne Standard.
The other heat went to last
year’s Kent Derby winner,
Exocet, who recorded the fastest
time of the day over the 480m
standard trip of 28.73.
Mark Wallis had a double with
Murlens Crash in the Sprint
and Bridge Bandit in the Super
Standard.

Four Rumbles Boxing
Academy youngsters
won southern county
titles on Saturday –
but only one fought.
Joe Tindall beat
Tyler Hall (Heart
of Portsmouth) on a
unanimous decision
in the under-46kg
final, while James
Lee, Tommy Dunn
and Kallum Tindall
were handed
walkovers to join
Tindall in the national
quarter-finals in
Swindon this month.
Both fighters sat off
early on before Tindall
drew his opponent in
with faints and sharp
shots.
The movement and
accuracy of Tindall
tipped the balance
in the second and
as Hall went on the
front foot in the third,
Tindall countered
with straight lefts and
spearing rights.
