Editor's Notes
I chose the title with an eye towards highlighting how PWD’s have been overlooked by employers but are ready, and able to make companies more profitable and productive
My birthplace, Bristol, VT. And Google, places where innovation happens. The first Google doodle was innovative at the time and still is today. People with disabilities innovate every day, because they need to adapt to a world not designed for them. People with disabilities are often overlooked not known in history. The individuals pictured are Ed Roberts( disability rights activist, Hoy, Grah, and Pride MLB players who were deaf and Isadore Muchnnick, a Jewish Boston city council member who played a huge role in desegregating baseball. Overall message each of these people were overlooked, but had amazing talents that made and continue to make, the world a better place and by continuing to hire people with disabilities Google, is showing itself to be a leader given the potential of people with disabilities as employees
Disability is universal, it adds to diversity in the sense that if affects everyone and so, in accommodating for it and hiring people with disabilities, you are creating an environment that is better for everyone
Although disability is different for everyone, it’s always good to know the types (physical, psychiatric, learning, intellectual, physical, the laws (ADA, IDEA Section 503, Section 504 and to use person first language, not the disabled, rather people with disabilities
Some stats about the potential for people with disabilities as consumers and how many there are in the USA. 56.7 million PWD in USA, 71% have invisible disabilities combined Income of friends and family is $735 billion and the disposable income is $544 billion
Graphic showing how economical it is to accommodate for people with disabilities
February 7, 2014Workplace Accommodations: Low Cost, High Impact Dr. Beth Loy retreived from askjan.org/media/lowcosthighimpact.html#findings
Current statistics showing how people with disabilities are vastly under represented in the American workforce
. Employment participation rate includes anyone who is currently working has not worked in the last 3 months. American Community Survey run by the U.S. census bureau, data is collected from 295,000 addresses per month and thus it is much larger and is not intended to measure demographics some employment numbers but not much the Current Population Survey is much more specific towards employment and people with disabilities ACS is larger so you can use that to look at State, level and county level, CPS is a much smaller amount CPS 50,000 households
The main factors that, in my opinion have led to this reality
Factors that have led to a massive increase in the numbers of people with disabilities entering post secondary education and so employers will be seeing more and more people with disabilities in the workforce
Facts about the program instituted by Wallgreens where a distribution plant in South Carolina was designed specifically for people with disabilities, and the workforce was made up of people with and without disabilities. The employees with disabilities have been an incredible catalyst for Wallgreens and increase their bottom line
Mark Wafer, an exec with Tim Hortons, has aggressively hired people with disabilities at all levels of management for his six franchises. The turnover rate in his sector is 100% Since he instituted the policy, his turnover has dropped to 38%.
A Danish company, with branches in the US and around the world, Specialisterne, does quality assurance for programming software. They train people with autism to do this because people on the autism spectrum have advanced abilities in detail, repetition and accuracy
