WHY RANKING IN MAPS MATTERS
RELEVANCY, DISTANCE & PROMINENCE MATTER
 Relevancy: This describes how well a listing
matches a search. If your listing is detailed and
up to date it is more likely to show up in search.
 Distance: Just like it sounds -- how far is each
potential search result from the location term
used in a search? If you don't specify a location
in your search, Google calculates distance
based on what it knows about the searcher’s
location.
 Prominence: This describes how well-known or
prominent a business is. This is based on
information Google finds about a business
from across the web (like links, articles, and

 By Claiming your listing on Google My Business, it makes it fast
and easy to manage your business information as it appears across
google search and maps
 This helps potential customers find important information
including phone number and hours of operation and driving
directions.

BRAND LISTINGS & LOCAL LISTINGS
• Brand Listings are for businesses and entities that aren’t local. They
can appear on Google Search but won’t appear on Google Maps.
• Local Listings can appear on Google Search and Maps. Those are
what we are going to focus on today.

 This means the business is verified. The business owner or
someone authorized to manage the business confirmed
the location.
 They can sign into the listing and make updates to the
listing that appear on search and maps.
 You can see suggestions to keep the listing up to date
plus a preview of the listing as it could appear on Google.
 When you sign in, if something is missing they are
highlighted for your attention.
 To access Google My Business from the diagnostic tool
Click the Edit Your Info Button. You will need to sign in
with the google user name and password assigned to
your listing.

 This means that business
information may appear on Google,
but the location is unconfirmed and
the business owner hasn't claimed
the listing.
 If this is your business you can claim
it to confirm the location and

OPTIMIZING YOUR GMB PAGE
 Business Name – Make sure this is your correct business name. Some businesses try to add keywords to
their business name to rank higher in maps. This is a HUGE NO-NO! Doing this could cause your listing to
get removed completely.
 Address – Be sure your address matches the address on the website, exactly. Sometimes Google will
change certain elements of the address (like changing Boulevard to Blvd), if this happens, change the
address to match the address as it appears on your Google My Business Listing.
 Category – You can add up to 5 services. Choose the ones that are the most relevant to your business
 Business Hours – Fill this out completely & make sure the information matches what’s on your website
 Photos – Try to add up to 10 photos. You can use pictures of the inside of your store, staff pictures and so
on.

  • 2. GOOGLE MY BUSINESS Google My Business puts your business info on Search, Maps and Google+ so that customers can find you, no matter what device they are using.
  • 3. IT’S IMPORTANT THAT YOUR BUSINESSES INFORMATION APPEARS CORRECTLY WHEN PEOPLE SEARCH ONLINE Research shows that 97% of consumers use the web to find local goods and services.
  • 4. ONLY 37% OF BUSINESSES HAVE CLAIMED A LOCAL BUSINESS LISTING

  • 10. RELEVANCY, DISTANCE & PROMINENCE MATTER  Relevancy: This describes how well a listing matches a search. If your listing is detailed and up to date it is more likely to show up in search.  Distance: Just like it sounds -- how far is each potential search result from the location term used in a search? If you don't specify a location in your search, Google calculates distance based on what it knows about the searcher’s location.  Prominence: This describes how well-known or prominent a business is. This is based on information Google finds about a business from across the web (like links, articles, and

  • 12. THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF LISTINGS BRAND LISTINGS & LOCAL LISTINGS • Brand Listings are for businesses and entities that aren’t local. They can appear on Google Search but won’t appear on Google Maps. • Local Listings can appear on Google Search and Maps. Those are what we are going to focus on today.

  • 16. DOES YOUR BUSINESS INFORMATION SHOW UP?
  • 17. NICE JOB. YOU’RE ON THE MAP  This means the business is verified. The business owner or someone authorized to manage the business confirmed the location.  They can sign into the listing and make updates to the listing that appear on search and maps.  You can see suggestions to keep the listing up to date plus a preview of the listing as it could appear on Google.  When you sign in, if something is missing they are highlighted for your attention.  To access Google My Business from the diagnostic tool Click the Edit Your Info Button. You will need to sign in with the google user name and password assigned to your listing.
  • 18. YOUR BUSINESS INFO MIGHT BE INCORRECT ON GOOGLE  This means that business information may appear on Google, but the location is unconfirmed and the business owner hasn't claimed the listing.  If this is your business you can claim it to confirm the location and manage the information that appears across Google Search and Maps.  Just click the button: Complete your Information.
  • 19. YOUR BUSINESS ISN’T ON THE MAP  If the diagnostic tool can’t find your information about the business you see this outcome.  Create the business listings click on the Let’s Get Started Button.  Before using this product you have to create or log in to a Google Account.
  • 20. SIGN INTO YOUR GOOGLE ACCOUNT Sign in to the Google Account you use for your business. Don’t have a Google Account? Click “Create an account” to get started.
  • 21. SELECT YOUR BUSINESS OR ADD IT See your business in the list? Click to continue. Don’t see your business? Click “Let me enter the full business details.”
  • 22. ENTER YOUR BUSINESS DETAILS Can’t find the perfect category? Pick something close.
  • 23. IF YOUR BUSINESS OPERATES OUT OF YOUR HOME Check this box if your business serves customers at their locations. Then set up a service area.
  • 24. CONFIRM YOUR BUSINESS Agree to the Terms of Service. Then, click “Continue.”

  • 28. MANAGE PHOTOS  You can add images to make the business stand out across Google. Add as many images as you can including a logo, profile photo and photos of the business.  Quality is important. Photos should be in a PNG or JPEG format between 10 kb & 5 mg. and they must be at least 720 X 720 pixels Click to manage photos
  • 29. CARDS  These are cards. The first card is called Insights. The data helps you understand the data’s visibility across Google. Data appears after the business is verified.

  • 31. OPTIMIZING YOUR GMB PAGE  Business Name – Make sure this is your correct business name. Some businesses try to add keywords to their business name to rank higher in maps. This is a HUGE NO-NO! Doing this could cause your listing to get removed completely.  Address – Be sure your address matches the address on the website, exactly. Sometimes Google will change certain elements of the address (like changing Boulevard to Blvd), if this happens, change the address to match the address as it appears on your Google My Business Listing.  Category – You can add up to 5 services. Choose the ones that are the most relevant to your business  Business Hours – Fill this out completely & make sure the information matches what’s on your website  Photos – Try to add up to 10 photos. You can use pictures of the inside of your store, staff pictures and so on.
  • 32. CONGRATULATIONS YOUR BUSINESS IF VERIFIED  You can access and edit your business information any time via the Google My Business Dashboard  To return to your dashboard visit www.google.com/business and sign in  Keep the details accurate and up to date.
